Are the 503 errors the result of a "hacker" attack?

I'm just wondering if this 503 on the forums problem might be the work of troublemakers like the TMNT image folks, but picking on the website instead of the virtual world.

I don't know but the 503 errors are even worse for me today than they were yesterday. They seem to have eaten the last few PM's I've written and my first attempt to post on this thread. :(

Much worse today. I try to get to a page now 4 or 5 times, before I give up and refresh. Then I have to close IE and start all over again because I can't get there from where I am.

A Sunday, increasing popularity of the Windlight client which apparently uses the same resource to log in... (unless I am making that part up)

I think it is Gremlins specifically mad at the Forum folks. We keep taking errors on the website and the Forum Cartel Group IMs inworld appear to be more borked than usual, however, I seem to be getting the group chat from some of my other groups without any problems.

I don't think it's a hacking issue, there have been intermittent issues for some time now. I'm getting this inworld now when I use search all.

No, it's far too bad to have anything to do with that sort of thing. This must come directly from LL.

I thought it was because they were adding new features. Who knows. I don't.

I dunno about it being hackers, I think they would just cause it all to go down

this is very strange, being they said it is fixed... yeah right ok, would hate to see their definition of broken.

and for those not sure what a 503 error is....

What is Error 503?
Error 503: Service Unavailable means; the server took too long to answer and the connection timed out.

I think the hypothesis is that the LL webservers are victims of a "Distributed Denial Of Service" attack, which would dump a massive load of traffic on the destination from a shifting network of coordinated hosts, themselves the victims of "Trojan Horses" that installed the attacking software. The 503 symptom could be caused by that, or by load-balancers trying to protect against it, or simply misconfigured--or a host of other ills.

I can't recall the last time anything listed as [RESOLVED] really was...

And I think it's funny as hell that the 503 error comes up immediately, and that it took 20 refreshes of this page to see what Suezanne's thoughts were on whether the 503 was the result of malicious actions.

Me, I think maybe it's a snowball effect caused from the fact that we all have to refresh each page 20 times to get past the first 503 :) Add to that the 60,000 people wanting to sign in using a client that seems to access resources on the same web server, and it would seem to me that LL shot themselves in the foot in the most obvious way possible, lol.

or just their normal network reliability...

I find it hilarious that when I opened this thread, I got:

From: someone
503 Service Unavailable

The service is not available. Please try again later.

So I backed out and tried again... and got:

From: someone
ERROR
The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: /invalid_link.html

The following error was encountered:

* Unable to forward this request at this time.

This request could not be forwarded to the origin server or to any parent caches. The most likely cause for this error is that:

* The cache administrator does not allow this cache to make direct connections to origin servers, and
* All configured parent caches are currently unreachable.

Your cache administrator is webmaster.

Or maybe LL went temporarily insane and switched the internet service to Comcast.
