I want to access to SL world in my office. But I'm not officially allowed. So I want to try a proxy. But I found it can't work by adding a proxy in my Internet Explorer. Who can tell how to configure a proxy for my SL client? Thanks.

In the Release Candidate there is a place to define a proxy.
Whether it works or not I am not sure. Control P for Preferences. (In the Release Candidate version of SL) Then Web tab. There's a section for Web proxy. There is a checkbox for enabling the proxy. There's a field for Address and one for Port Number. There used to fields like that is the regular client a while back. They were used, at least not in a full and complete manner, and I'm not sure about these proxy fields either. These might be proxies for the inclient mozilla browser to use, rather than for the whole SL datastream to be run through. Here's a web page on the topic: http://www.sl-through-a-proxy.com/ I don't know anything about the contents of that web page so don't ask me expecting further info on it. _____________________

If your sysadmin configured the network to provide only minimal connectivity it's probably to avoid employees playing at work ![]() How about working for a change? ![]() _____________________

If you're running FF or IE7, or anything but IE6, you can try http://ajaxlife.net
It's a text version of SL, and while you can teleport, you can't see anything...NO graphics. You can see your inventory, but can't do anything with it (at least, I can't). However, you can get chat, you can IM. If you do use it, please support her by donating to her PayPal account. We're not allowed to download, or install here at the office, and I've been using this, until it broke in IE6, which the office uses. And yes, I was donating to her PP account ![]() It's run through an encrypted Amazon server, so your password is safe. Did I mention that you should donate to her PP account? The girl is 16 years old and paying for the hosting herself. _____________________

If you work in a company that makes you specify a proxy address in order to get to the Internet, they're very likely blocking traffic on most/all other ports, which means you won't be able to make SL work on your network.
Some companies have SOCKS proxies, which are all-powerful, but most apps don't have SOCKS support, and you need the proxy address and sometimes an account/password in order to use it. Some applications have an "http proxy" feature. For example, Yahoo Messenger lets you choose whether to use a Yahoo Messenger proxy or an http proxy. The latter makes Yahoo Messenger kind of work like a web browser so it can slip through your company's web proxy. Very few apps have this ability. _____________________

i dont know if this would work
but you can try 'slproxy' by LibSecondlife You run it on your pc before you run SL and you set the -loginuri to your localhost:8080 might work if you leave it running at home, and didnt have a wall of fire, and tunneled thru from work i've never tried it but its worth a 'sh0t' _____________________

Bypassing your company's firewall with a proxy requires that the proxy server be running outside of the company's network. Then your work machine tunnels the (hopefully encrypted) traffic to the external server which relays it on to LL. Not terribly difficult to set up with a little networking skill and the appropriate hardware. But if your company's net admins are even moderately paranoid and competent your SL traffic is still likely to raise red flags. I'd stick with reading the forums during the day.

Perhaps someone in a position to test it out could try the approach given in the web page I linked to above: http://www.sl-through-a-proxy.com which starts out with:
This document describes how to play Second Life and other stubborn online games in restricted places where all Internet connectivity is through a web proxy or a restrictive firewall only. Note that the approach described here involves an application called Your Freedom. This application and the corresponding service is free to use in its rudimentary form and for testing, but in order to use more sophisticated service components permanently, a service package needs to be bought. The service needed to play games like Second Life is not very expensive though (less than 4 EUR per month). This HOWTO focuses on Windows but similar things can be done with other operating systems as well. Please contact the author if you need assistance. Some pictures in this HOWTO enlarge if you click on them. _____________________

I read the webpage SueC linked and it is a 3rd party service doing what Ravenhurst described. This approach does avoid what Wildefire is concerned about, since the VPN tunnel between your PC at work and the "Freedom" service conceals SL's port usage from the firewall. However, personally, I would be concerned that the security of my SL account might be compromised.
As Ravenhurst said, you could set this up yourself, thereby eliminating the security concern I had with the Freedom service. But I think it would be difficult unless you have a lot of networking savvy. You would need a decent machine on your home network that will be up whenever you want to use SL, broadband to your home which is capable of supporting SL in BOTH directions, and a VPN configured to go through your work firewall, that can be terminated at your PC at work. Even if you did succeed in setting up a VPN or used a service, the bandwidth required by SL would probably raise a flag with your company's IT staff. It would look like you were tunneling video or bittorrent stuff, and most IT staffs are on the watch for that. Before trying this, consider whether you want to risk your job this way. _____________________
