Detailed, step-by-step tutorials on setting up opensim, are here:

http://chapter-and-metaverse.blogspot.com/

If you come unstuck on any step then just post a comment under the relevant tutorial and I will assist you.

You might get away with a couple of visitors at a time on a good domestic connection (did I read that here somewhere?) but any more than that and your sim will begin to lag badly - you'll need your own server or rented server space somewhere.

If you are not that confident with computers you are likely to find setting up your own grid very difficult. My advice would be to start small, in standalone mode and allow plenty of time to find your feet - there's a lot to learn.

Rock: Those tutorials look great, thanks for posting the link.

Thanks.

Yes, you can use your home PC as a server, but some ISP's do not allow it, and the upload speed will be the main bottleneck if they do allow it.

More info here, http://chapter-and-metaverse2.blogspot.com/2008/11/hosting-sim.html including how to get an idea of your upload speed.

If you are comfortable with Linux you can get a VPS to host a lightweight opensim for as little as US$15/month.

Bears the question - why then?

If you expect to do this with a quality even remotely comparable to SL *and* have other people in it, you ARE gonna end up with costs... which you don't want apparently.

So this is one of the times where I scratch my head and don't get it.

OP, not to rain on your parade but you really need to have a good grip on running a LAMP server before you can begin to install and maintain opensim. Even after (if) you get it working, you will find that it has limitations that you will want to troubleshoot and understand, to say nothing of the fact that your region will be a blank slate. You will need to create everything in this new world from scratch. There are some opensource textures and animations you can load in, but, if you are not already pushing the limits of what you can achieve in SL, you will most likely find the experience frustrating.

The physics engine, for one, is very limited, compared with what is available currently in SL.

I am running one at home because I like messing around with computers, not because I think I can run an alternative to SL.

If it was easy, everyone would do it.

What have you tried so far, and what was the result?

Get it working standalone first and make sure it work, then move on to getting it on a grid.

You're probably going to want to find someone who runs Linux in your neighborhood to show you this, then: There's no other way around it.

The folks at osgrid or on the opensimulator mailing list will probably be able to help you more with this than folks here can.

The sim won't lag badly, neither will the client. The connection? oooh boy!

IIRC, you need to compile something first; novices probably won't find this task very easy under Linux and nearly impossible under Windows.

osgrid.org does a good job doing exactly what it sounds like they want to do.

I'm curious what brings this up. Nothing wrong with the comment or anything, I'm just interested in knowing what you know on the subject.

Preliminary testing on osgrid last summer near Wright Plaza, the only real difference I noticed was that I could cross region boundaries to the next region without the noticable skip for region handoff thanks to neighboring sims being prepared for it (unlike here).
