Hello, and thanks for all the help you give to newbies like me.

I have made a lot of friends in SL and am having difficulty keeping track of who they are & what we talked about.

I see there are contact cards for friends in my inventory & can add info to the last tab.

If I open an IM window for a friend, I can see only a few lines our recent converstations.

Is there a way of showing a more complete 'history' of a conversation ?

Any other ideas or tips ?

Thanks

FH

Menu - Edit - Preferences - Communications gives you a bunch of tick box options allowing you to retain text logs of your chat and IM conversations on your own machine, in a folder you can define in that tab as well.

Open their profile, and go to the last tab to the right. Here you can enter notes, such as where you've been, how you met them, and whether they owe you money. :p

Flutterby, you can recall everything that's ever been said to you or by you in either IM or chat...by logging.

Go to Edit/Preferences/Communication. If they are not already checked, check off the boxes for "log IM" and "log chat". Note the file location on your hard drive for the logs (you can change that directory path if you want.)

Assuming that those boxes are already checked, here's how to find those logs.

Go to the file folder noted in the Preferences window. There will be a lot of .TXT files. All of your IM conversations will be separate files, with the name of the person you were talking to. Your local chat will be in one big .TXT file called, I think, "chat.txt"

I also like to enable the options to include date and timestamps with IMs and chat. This makes it a bit easier to find a particular conversation.

In case you are wondering why Lindal has redundantly posted, repeating my suggestion, it is not because she has problems reading, but because she has almost certainly set me to "Ignore", thereby not realising that her solution has already been offered, wasting her time and others.

Pep (Ghosty must have missed you saying you knew about the last tab in Profiles)

Useful extra tips those, and they adhere nicely to the second Rule of Helping People.

Rule 1: Don't treat people as though they're uneducated idiots, even if you think they *are* uneducated idiots.

Rule 2: Always give people the most complete set of information you can, and hopefully you will then have answered any follow-up questions they might have asked had you only given them the bare facts.

Easy to see why you were a mentor :)

I didn't hear anything. I *thought* I heard something, but it was likely just some wind. :)

I heard a faint squeaking. Actually, I thought I had a mouse in the room here. I was about to jump on my chair and scream, or something O.o

Damnit Pep and all of you others. Would you all just freakin stop nickpicking and coming back with another comment.

it seems that nobody can manage to be adult enough to walk away and stop this stupid game. Everyone has to just keep at it, thinking that if they ignore stuff it might look like they are admitting wrong or giving in. Or maybe everyone just cannot stand to not get the last word.

I don't give a crap who is right or wrong anymore. I am tired of this constantly going on here. Too many are behaving like cranky kids these days.

Sorry Lil, my Dad told me "Don't start fights, but make sure you finish 'em".

Well, you do not always have to finish them. Sometimes it takes more guts and/or maturity to walk away (and walk away quietly, without making a fuss about it).

Now, let's all play nice.......
:)

or if that is too boring, we can go argue with <not-naming-names> about whether or not LL is the most ebil entity in the world and WoW is the greatest thing since sliced bread (you know, I never did find out what was the greatest thing before sliced bread).

Or we can all go play at the Bear Info Hub, assuming we can get there because of the masses that always mob the place.

(yes, sometimes me is bad too)

:D :p

you pinned me on this one, I will admit it
I always feel the need to reply, because if I don't then I think, others will think my silence = guilty or wrong, or whatever....

but I am trying to overcome that.

(sometimes I am just plain stubborn though LOL)

but yes I agree (and I am guilty of it too) the little jabs back and forth are annoying (and if you are on the receiving end, they can be hurtful even if the receiver doesn't want to admit it)
