Ok, so I got a brand new laptop for my birthday recently since my old one was... well, old. Everything works great on it even though I had a few snags with Vista. So I decided to download SL on it and see how that worked but it didn't. It downloaded and installed just fine, but after I log in and it loads it crashes immediately.
I tried to look in the support section, but I couldn't find anything helpful. I don't see why my graphics card could be a problem either - and on that note I'm not sure if it IS a problem or not. Or maybe SL is just having some downtime? Either way, I'm at the end of my rope and figured if I can't get actually ASK someone through e-mail or something that I might as well try to here. I hope this is the right place for this.
Thanks in advance, and I apologise if this is the wrong place to ask this.

What kind of graphics card do you have? You need to post the stats about your computer to get any help, but you are correct, it does belong in Technical Issues (technically).

That's the other thing, I'm not really sure. This Vista stuff is totally different and half the time I'm not sure what I'm looking at. But this is what I could find: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family

I have Vista on my laptop, and a mobile Intel graphics chip and it runs fine. What you may need to do is update all your drivers first.
Who is the laptop's manufacturer? Do you have an invoice? The invoice normally shows the specs.

It's a Gateway. I updated the driver through Windows Update and tried again but it still didn't work. Maybe I didn't update it correctly? I'm sorry I sound like such a noob but I'm really not sure what to do.

I'm sorry I sound like such a noob but I'm really not sure what to do. I found I couldn't connect to SL on a new PC. Windows driver update did nothing. I went to the card manufacturer's site (ATI) and loaded an updated driver from there. Now it's fine. It may not be the driver causing the problem of course, but worth trying this perhaps.

From: Chang Yakan reply from SL support I received a reply from SL support however they don't seem to have any concrete reasons for, or solutions to my recent log in problems. They examined the crash reports and logs I sent them and suggested that: " your graphic card, Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family, is not supported or at best not tested, as listed there: http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php" they suggested that I should: " visit your manufacturer's website and update your drivers to the latest and then follow the steps on this site: http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=043 and verify you do as required on these link for your connection: http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=029and: http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=331, then try to run Second Life despite the incompatibility, but apart that there isn't more we can do about this matter" so despite being able to connect already I decided to update my graphics card drivers anyway. Still no problems, all is well. I guess updating our graphics cards can't hurt. My conclusion is that something in the new version of Sl messed up my ability to connect properly. Someone at SL has now fixed the problem, but they have not notified SL support. good luck, Chang Here are some links to other places in the forums where people with similar or equal cards had problems. /111/3e/221255/1.html/111/98/201800/1.html

Maybe this will help; put in your operating system (what brand of Vista?) and select GO! http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2800&lang=eng

When you install certain programs with Vista its best to right click first on the setup download and Choose "Run as Administrator." Try reinstalling it thatr way if you didn't already and get the latest driver update from Intel. And make sure you tell your firewall/security to allow SL.

If you are able to display the Second Life login screen, then before you log in , click on Preferences, then click the About button at the bottom left.
This will produce some information about your computer that you can highlight, Control C to copy, then Control V to paste in here.

You need to download the graphics driver from the card/chipset website NOT Windows. For some reason, and I never figured why, the OEM drivers work better. I had the same issue with Vista Home Premium and once I downloaded a new driver from the graphics card OEM site all worked just fine.
