I've been having problems with packet loss and downloads recently. I tore my hair out trying to figure out what the problem was. My ISP told me my modem was ok. Long story short, finally, out of sheer desperation, I ordered the best modem I could from newegg.com, the D-Link DCOM202. So far, it's been a minor miracle cure. I get great download speeds now and no more significant packet loss. Just an fyi for some of you.

I've long suspected our modem was a problem (nevermind that it cannot be reset or even shut off without unplugging it) and my cable company insists it's fine. I have a super speedy connection and most of the time, SL is great......but this definitely validates my suspicion that my modem is a bit sketchy and THAT effects SL!!!

I have been ongoing issues with my orange Livebox (france telecom) packet loss, connection dropping.
last time I spent 60 minutes on the phone trying to work it out with the technician, after which it was slightly better but still sucked. The kicker is that they charge 30 centimes (~50cents us) per minute for the service call.
After I looked at my phone bill I decided to go and buy the cheapest adsl modem I could find and ended up with one for about 40 euro that works fine.
Let's see... a new modem that works for 40 euro or another 30 euro service call... easy choice.
The livebox(or deadbox) is going 6 feet under, or back to orange so they can give it out to some other sucker.

From: Steve Mahfouz My ISP told me my modem was ok. In general, unless the modem is actually on fire or at least smoking, you can expect an ISP to tell you this.

I have a D-Link modem ( I believe a sub of Cisco ( correct me if I'm wrong )). it was powered by a 1000ma psu that blew within 3 weeks of commision ..
.. I replaced this with a generic psu ( 500ma from an Ebay deal ) and it has performed perfect since then.
Less than half the power on demand than the original psu .
