I have a friend that when he/she signed up she used a fake first name and last name when signing up for the account, thinking it was okay because they didn't want to give up there real life identity. Now he/she wants to fix it with real life first name and last name without getting banned in SL for false identity.. any ideas?

Call LL on the phone. She will have to fax some ID, but they should straighten it out.

It would be easier to change her rl name (by deed poll in the UK) than to get LL to change anything.

Pep (Or just start another alt.)

A qualified 'yes' to this, but just in case they blow it out of proportion and accuse your friend of being responsible for everything from Copybot to Global Warming and permaban her ...

I would suggest she transfer everything she can to the alt's inventory, and use a different, but LEGIT, email address for each account.

You *can* transfer everything . . .

Pep ( . . . if you use copybot. ;) )

I think I better own up that in RL my name is Tom Cruise and I joined SL with the express intention of recruiting converts to the Official Church of Daft Pulp-writer's Bullcrap. Spinster and Drama are my two favouritest units. My sincerest, sofa-hoppin apologies for any confusion caused.

Anybody seen Valkyrie yet? How'd you like that one-eye'd number I did?

Cool, eh?

It's an interesting situation. I believe that using false RL info can attract a penalty, so does one own up, ask for a change and risk the penalty, or keep quiet and start again? I think I'd go for the latter - just in case.

LL changed my RL name in my account after the first time I tried to take money out - it was denied without any explanation. I learned the reason on the phone - it was because I'd used Phil as my RL first name, when my bank account has it as Phillip, of course, and the system couldn't match them. But that wasn't false information. For false information, I think I'd prefer to start again unless there is some compelling reason not to that is worth the risk.

Maybe LL should run a 90 day amnesty program and let everyone who needs to correct their information without penalty. Or better yet LL just give us the page needed to maintain our name and address information under our account page.

Then we have to wonder about the possibility LL will force publish our real life identities. I'm not sure I would want that to happen given the threats some wacko posted on my blog on numerous occasions. If LL is going to out us then they need to give us the opportunity to have our accounts terminated and removed from search so the information will never be revealed.

Just FYI for anyone creating a new account who wants to avoid this problem... the RegApi at the Emerald viewer site doesn't require you to give your name, just your birthdate. So you can start a new SL av without having to choose between giving away RL information or lying. Of course, that doesn't help those of you who already have the avs.

With things like this, I so often wonder how many of the "my friend" posts are really the person asking rather than "a friend". I mean, why does the *friend* not come ask the question?

Because, in this case, it would reveal who gave false data?

Perhaps they think it is safer to post with an account other than the one which has infringed on the TOS ... Linden alts are occasionally seen in seemingly random threads.

Of course - that is why I added the rolling eyes smiley -- cuz they **think** they are fooling us.

I had forgotten about this side of the equation. However, if LL really cared, they could easily find the IP that the asking person is using and then find all other accounts using that same IP and therefore narrow things down a bit.

I meant from that point of view in my previous post.

If I post that a friend gave false info, then whoever at LL reads it, it still doesn't refer to me, even if it *is* me, so it doesn't give anything away, and my IP is safe. But if I post that *I* gave false info, it's unlikely, but I could be out of SL in no time flat.

The more I think about this, combined with the *apparent intelligence* of the LL folks, using an alt to post the question really is good cuz the majority of LL would be fooled and would not think to go find that alt's IP and tie it to other accounts -- whereas, I would immediately go find every account coming from the same IP and check to see what info they gave when they signed up.
