Hi, I know I've seen this discussed before, but I can't find it and have forgotten the answer
If my neighbor has ban lines at our mutual property border, how far back should I build that that the lines won't be visible in my house, or out my window?

Thanks, Cinders. (the thread she is referring to is here: /327/25/210998/1.html ) It is mostly about work around solutions. There was one mention that the lines are visible from as far away as 10-15 meters. Anyone know what the "official" distance is, if I just wanted to make sure my wall was far enough away? And at the risk of sounding stupid, can someone explain to me what it means when someone says put a non-alpha texture in your wall to block it? Thanks,

Ban lines are a partially tranparent texture, also called an alpha texture. So are virtually all one-prim walls that have windows in them. If both are in the same line of sight, the alpha sorting glitch makes the ban lines sometimes show up in front of the wall, instead of behind it. If you're far enough away not to see the ban lines, you're also far enough not to have a sorting glitch. If you can see the ban lines at that distance, then they can still peek through.
If there is a non-alpha texture between the two alpha textures, positioned so it would also be facing the user, this doesn't happen. So you could, for example, put a thin prim textured with non-alpha textures to either side of and above and below the window, and then embed this in the wall...
But at that point, you may as well just design the wall that way in the first place, using 5 prims, 4 of which are the wall on either side, above and below, and all of which use non-alpha textures, and one being the alpha-textured window. That way, only the window itself will have the sorting glitch. Thuis is how I make all my better-quality builds. It minimizes the alpha sorting issues for those in the building.

The ban line visibility varies with the angle of sight and the nature of whatever is on the other side of them. Generally, I've found 7 or 8 metres to be the range. Your mileage may vary, there does not appear to be an absolute figure.
It's always worth talking to the neighbour politely. Many are unaware of how intrusive their lines are. Some are unaware that the lines are there at all. They can't see them. I've had neighbours on some parcels remove their ban lines. Some went for a security orb instead. Others realised that they didn't really need the things. Sometimes it's "because I can".
