Incompatible Video Card?

I just got a new PC and am having extreme problems with the SL UI .. starts fine but within minutes begins to move slow and eventually crashes. Memory is good (2GB), and the processor is not the issue (Dual-Core) .. so all I can think is that the video card is not supported. It is an Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset with 384mb RAM.

Anyone know if this is the issue? Or if there is any particular configurations I might need to set?

Oh yea .. the machine is an HP Compag 6910p.

Thanks!

Harsh advice, but if you can, get a refund and get a Dell. You may also find your wirelsss internet defective as well. I bet it loads Windows very slow too?

Actualy wirelss works great ... conects quickly to SL and loads the inital view of the location perfectly .. its just that within minutes everything starts moving super slow and then either crashes or locks up.

Changing machines is not an option ... just want to know if the card is the problem and if there are any work arounds.

Just came off a Dell (that blew up) ... that had if I remember correctly and Inte 945 chipset

Bandy, have you tried changing a bit your preferences to reduce lag?

Also... do you have some websites loaded at the same time? Some of them reduce your computer work and it keeps froozing, could be that :S

Found the fix ... it is a problem with the 965 chipset, apparently otehrs are having this same issue (did a google). The hack is described on an Intel Blog:

http://softwareblogs.intel.com/2007/11/29/there-is-a-hack-for-second-life-and-the-intel-965-chipset/

Seems to be working

Also check with the manufacturer's site and Intel's site for any 'updates' for the drivers. Many times new computers get shipped with factory settings/drivers and don't get the needed updates.

aside from my poor opinion of the intel chipset mentioned, it's rather annoying that the referenced link blames the open GL implementation for the issue with object/object occlusion(o3). when it's in fact LL's buggy code, with it's rather nasty memory leak(s). glad you got it fixed though, and for those that read the article, alot of debug type settings can be forced in there

I spoke too soon. It seemed to be fixed but sadly was just an illusion. Have spent the afternoon trying different things. As well read that there were problems with dual-core machines .. and have tried all those fixes as well and nothing seems to work. Can If anyone has an answer for this I would really appreciate it, hate to lose my second-life.

The Intel chipset is your problem. Never ever ever get anything with an Intel chipset. It's not a true graphics accelerator, and it's not compatible with SL. The SL list of compatibility says so as well. You'd be better off exchanging your machine for one with an ATI or even better NVidia graphics accelerator.

The inexpensive Dell D600 series that did have a intel 965 was a tweaked version of the same chipset

When lowest price is the first consideration even the budget Dells aren't the greatest.

Whenever something new is inherently defective as is your computer, there is always an option to force them to refund it. HP is being sued already about this. The wireless is also a major issue that is in court. I already know their arm can be twisted to refund it. First try forcing the store it came from, then HP. I personlly know two people who just a few days ago able to get the refund on their HP Laptop

Or you can just enjoy your permenent lemon......enjoy.
