Hi all,
I'm hoping somone here can shed some light for me...
I recently purchased an island and am interested in having someone else be able to plant linden plants etc. My understanding is that the only way to do that is to either be the land owner or deed the land to group and then group members can plant linden plants, etc.
I was able to find a little info on this in the Knowledge base but felt it didn't quite answer my question.
What (if any) are the implications or things I should be aware of when considering deeding a Private Island/Estate to group?
Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give on this matter.

If you own the land (i.e. your name appears as the owner in About Land) and the land is set to allow resale then there shouldn't be any implications outside of that which you have on the mainland. The only thing to remember when deeding to group is do *not* click the 'make contribution with deed' box.
If the land is not set to allow resale then you won't be able to deed it, but the estate manager should be able to do that for you. I've done it several times on my island and it takes only a minute.
The ability to plant linden plants is a separate 'ability' under the group roles if I'm not mistaken, so when you're setting the group roles and abilities go through the list to ensure that particular one is active for the members in question.

Hi Atashi. Thank you for your response.
Just to clarify...I am the estate owner. This just happens to be the first estate/island that I have purchased from LL and I'm trying to make sure I'm understanding things clearly.
I guess my question is/was....being that I am the estate owner, is there any reason I wouldn't want to deed it (without making contribution) to group?
Thanks!

Hi,
I also have just bought my first island. Remember that as the island owner you will always have a button that says 'Reclaim Land' so no matter who you sell/deed/rent/give bits or all of your land to, you can always just click that 'Give it Back' button.
Beware though, 1 click and its your, which might upset people who have rented or bought from you. You will not be asked for confirmation.
Regards, Beady Voom

Deeding to group helps in a lot of ways, I think. I have a large section of my island set up as open to the public, and the entire section is deeded to a group. This lets me add group members in various roles (security, for example) so that they have various abilities on that land.
I've done the process for a few of my residents, where someone has rented a plot then wants to make it group land so their SO can have equal access and control. In that case the process is 3 steps and it's very quick. I reclaim the land, they invite me to the group as an officer, I deed the land to their group, then I leave their group. (Land on my island is rental only, no-resale, so I'm the only one who can do the deeding). I explain the process to them before-hand and a minute later it's all done.
If you're the estate owner then really there's no risk involved for you at all. Deed it to the group and then if you decide you don't want it to be group land, as Beady said just reclaim it and it's back in your name again.
The reason you don't want to 'make contribution' is that estate land is tier-free so you don't want to confuse the system by donating tier for land that has no tier... it will probably end up bumping up your tier unnecessarily.

All the sims that I have been an Estate Manager for used a land group and deeded all un-sold land in the Estate to that land group, so the Estate Manager could assist with things like planting trees and the like. When land in the sim was sold, the purchaser was encouraged to set up their own land group, and as a courtesy should allow the sim owner and possibly Estate Manager(s) to be part of that group. (That allows the landlord and staff to assist in group-related areas, and to fix some things that otherwise might require the sim owner to reclaim the land.)
Some basic caveats:
Make sure, of course, that the group you deed the land to will ALWAYS have at least two members, by using the sim owner and an alt of the sim owner to establish the group.
Pay attention to what abilities are assigned to what roles in the group, and divide responsibilities as needed. The "Everyone" group should be stripped of everything but the ability to receive notices. Only the owner needs to have the "pay liabilities" role. There's a set of abilities like being able to place linden plants and being able to affect group-owned objects that a landscaper would need. There are other things a terraformer needs. It's handy to set up a "Residents" group for those allowed to set a hole point on the land, and for renters, with abilities they will need. And rember that all these roles are additive. So you can set someone up to rent on that land by being in the Everyone, resident and landscaping groups, without giving them terraform rights. Be creative.
