Crash

I need advice. I first joined SL yesterday and went ok. I am trying to log in and PC keeps crashing and I keep trying and it keepd booting me out.
Another question: Do I need to pay at all to be in here?If so, how much, roughly?

I think it would be easier to help you with your first problem if you indicated the type of hardware you are accessing SL with, especially the type of processor, amount of RAM installed and type of video card. Also, what exactly happens when you are "booted out"? Do you get an error message or any other clues you could relay to us?

You do not need to pay anything to have a basic account but you will probably find that you want to spend some money buying Lindens so you have some spending money in game but I recommend just getting a feel for things to start, there are lots of places you can find great freebies in world.

Thanks Gabby Handrick. After many atempts, it has let me in! Thanks again for the economic side of my questions too. I am still trying to find a way to change my AV as I tried to modify it and look like a freak, lol but I am reading posts to help me.

I crash frequently too. Sometimes I am in for over an hour, sometimes I can stay in for only a few minutes before a crash.

One thing to be careful about:
It seems that when you crash and log in again, the system remembers your clothing (or lack of clothes!) but not where you were at the time of the crash. I was in a very public place (where people would be expected to be very modest). Then I went to a changing room and removed all my clothes (to do some tweaking on my shape). I crashed, so I logged in again. I was back at the very public place but totally naked! I teleported away quickly, but it seemed like forever.

It was extremely embarrassing! I am a very modest person, and I think of my avatar as me (it looks just like me). So I felt like I would if in RL I found my self in public butt naked.

Kinda reminds me of dreams I once had in which I would suddenly find myself naked in an inappropriate place.

Seriously, Meaculpa, crashes are common. Perhaps people who have a large RAM or fast connections don't crash, but I do crash frequently.

Lags are also a problem that many people have. For me, as the lags get longer I end up crashing.

That's why you have the option of specifying your start location. If you crashed in a, well, not entirely presentable situation, just log in to your home or one of the water sims (which are usually empty). Note down a couple of water sim names and keep them handy to type in when needed.

If you TP somewhere, you appear as a white cloud and then as default grey, so there's a chance nobody else actually sees your full birthday suit if you TP away or put clothes on promptly!
