Pretend you're a rug and lay on the floor?

I'm sorry I couldn't resist. I have no answer. The image of you with furniture attached to you is very hilarious tho.

Sounds like you accidentally 'placed' it on an invisible set of wings? If you had a set of wings or something else attached to your chest, even if they are invisible you could end up selecting them as the 'surface' to drop the item on. Since only one thing can be attached at a single point, the object replaces the wings and attaches to your chest instead.

The fix is to rotate your camera position so such attachments can't be in the way, then place the item.

Right click, detatch it, then make sure you're not dragging it onto yourself when you take it from inventory. Make sure not to let go until your mouse is on the floor, not any part of you.
