Morning!
This might be a bit of a boring thread, but as I'm still high on my noob enthusiasm (and what Bilbo kept donating to me last night in Taffs Bar!) and I've got this dream of a SL Pub Quiz.
So my question is this:
a) Does such a thing exist in SL? I saw a Trivia Machine in Taffs Bar but didn't get round to using it. b) Do you think there would be a number of people who would be interested in such a thing? (even though you could cheat if you wanted) c) Would it be possible to do it in the format of a Live Music gig where somebody reads the questions out just like in a real pub?
Obviously it's not everybodies bag, but if there was a pub in SL that held a pub quiz, say every Tuesday night between 8pm and 9pm, I would definately be there and I can't be the only one. Can I?? There could be a prize for the winner of ........ a new hairdo.
There could still be music playing and everybody could still chat in the room.
What do the experts think? Am I barking up the wrong virtual tree? Do I have my pixels mixed up? Would a Pub Quiz be as welcome in SL as a naked avatar in an art gallery?
Keen bean would like to know your thoughts.
Question 1 ......................

Hi Sandy,
There's lots of different types of trivia available in SL. Some are automated machines, some are done by hosts.
The club I work at has a minimum of 4 trivia events every week, two of which I host on Thursdays. I do one at noon and one at 6pm SLT. A friend of mine also hosts trivia events at another club at 9am some mornings though I haven't checked them out yet. I'd be glad to give you a link to where she works also.
Just drop me an IM inworld and I can give you more info or just check the picks on my profile.

Question 1 ...................... Hi Sandy We have a "Trivia Treasure Chest", which is a quiz system. Basically a visitor clicks on the chest in our reception area, and they are given a bracelet. When you wear the bracelet, the system sends you questions with multiple choice answers every couple of minutes. Every time you get one right, your score increases. You can configure the system to give out prizes or money when an AV gets so many right answers. You can run thew system as an automated or hosted event. The idea of reading out questions using the stream is good - however, there are a couple of things as a host you need to be aware of.... 1) Not everyone at teh event will have the music stream turned on 2) The nature of the streams in SL mean that everyone hears the stream at different times, so you could not do a "fastest finger first" type quiz However, we do find thatat the events we have, a little trivia is normally welcomed by most If you want to try out the quiz yourself and see how it works, go to our club http://slurl.com/secondlife/Ranthambore/174/13/37/ and you will find the treasure chest in the reception area on the right hand side Gomez Gomez

Mornin' Sandy! .. how's the head? Good to catch you at Taff's. I can only apologise for the 'hooo's. It's not normally that bad. Usually far more witty conversation with Kirsty and Danni 'personing' the place Spooky you should ask about a pub quiz. I only just heard from another thread that The Three Lions at Bourton Village has closed. This was one of the very first places I ever went and first groups I joined. Spooky cos it was there one evening they held a 'live' pub quiz that was an absolute riot . One of my fondest memories. It used to swing from desolate to laghetti bolognaise in minutes but I will sorely miss the place! IM Kirsty or Fred at Taff's and they might put it to the group ... or we can party crash Bradleys

Thanks Bradley, Bilbo and Gomez!!
Great suggestions, thanks very much I'll be sure to check them out. Definately a good idea to head to Bradley's.
I thought the Hooots were quite amusing last night but that could be because I have yet to reach my Hoooot tolerance level.
If one wants to Hooot, do you just type Hooot into chat or do you need to add something else? Also with applause, is that the same?
There I go again taking my threads off in a completely different direction

From: Bradley Bracken There goes the neighborhood. LOL ..... nice sig btw Bradley And hello Sandy As I've noted before I'm no expert on pubs or quizzes in same, but I wouldn't think running such an event over a music stream would work very well. First of all, like Gomez pointed out, the stream does not come in at the same time for everyone. Secondly, music streams can cut out at random times for everyone, volume varies wildly, as does the quality of the stream. So not exactly a fair playing field I'd imagine I'm guessing the hoots were gestures, which are basically customised chat combinations usually with added sound, that are triggered by a specific key combination. Don't worry you'll probably tire of them soon enough They're a pet hate for many people. I've got a couple of silly ones that I use occasionally when hanging out with friends, find them very annoying in busy places with a lot of chat going on. In case you want to annoy the life out of people like me, I may have a couple of really irritating ones I can throw at you.

When DJ's announce things you have some people responding way before others have even heard the last song stop. Pretty much clubs do what ours does, the music plays, people dance and the trivia is held in chat. Or just go to any of the many freebie places. You'll find boxes full of more gestures than you'll ever need. A lot of them can be fun for awhile but most get tired fast. Have a great time with all the crazy ones at first though. They really are great fun. With time you'll find a basic Hoooo or something like that here and there is usually all you need.

The only way around this I can think of is if the host does the quiz in rounds, and the players fill out a notecard with the answers for that section and give the notecard witht he answers to the host for marking? Assuming everyone can hear the stream, it could be workable - however, newbies may find doing the notecard thing a bit confusing... Gomez

I'd be up for a full on live pub quiz with the host streaming..be just as easy (or better perhaps) to text though. It wouldn't be fastest finger of course....the host would prompt the participants who would IM her/him the answer, so no one else sees their answer?? Score's added up at the end. Mmm..would be a blast i think...especially when people start crashing ...if its all done in a spirit if fun.

Gomez mmmm..yeah..i'm thinking just the host has a sheet...takes the names of the players..ask the questions one at a time...players IM the answers to him/her one at a time....host keeps the score? That would work i think?

Hi Sandy
I have a small pub on one of my islands that one of my residents has just taken over, with the idea of having pub quizzes and the like. Drop me an IM inworld and I'll introduce you and show you around. Same goes for anyone else who's interested! Inc

If I might elaborate on The Three Lions Pub Quiz, I couldn't remember exactly how it was done but Gomez cracked it. Questions were 'chatted' by the host with participants filling out a notecard. Even so, it was a real scream with the questions being lost in background chat and folk asking for repeats, newbies or the non-concentrating chatting out their answers with the resulting plethora of reactions by the others just making it even more difficult to keep track. I called it a riot before. It is rather accurate. Thank goodness Bourton Village never had damage enabled LOL I missed out a number in my notecard and thus got an answer in the wrong question. The host read this out to my embarrassment. It raised a far greater laugh than anything I could have invented! One of those precious nights I logged out with tears rolling down my face

Now that SL has voice capabilities it should be possible to do a quiz quite easily, without the machines churning out questions. Questions could be asked by voice and answers taken by the 1st right answer in text. The biggest problem would be keeping scores. Music trivia would be quite good too...play a tune and the 1st with artist and title wins.

I host trivia also, every Wednesday at 7:30pm. I don't do it during my events, I do it as a separate event, right before our weekly pool parties. I put the questions in chat, and the first correct response wins. By first, I mean, the first in my chat log. That also means that if I get chat out of order, a rare thing since I'm lucky to be on a sim that has no lag, but should it happen, we still go by what I see in chat. And yes, someone with a slower connection, or slow typing fingers, is at a disavantage. But most people are here to have fun, not to win the L$25-50 I pay per question . I have considered doing a trivia using voice. But it seems that a number of the people who come to trivia every week, do not have voice. MY DJ does a song trivia during events. People have to IM him their replies, I think that's the best way, although it means a ton of IMs for him. As for the hoots, we like them in small quantities. Speaking of gestures, I've made some just for our trivias...fun stuff when used but not overused. So, having said all this, is there a difference between trivia and pub quizzes?

Not until they add the ability to turn off the positional voice feature per parcel and add the moderation feature they initially announced. People too far away from the host would loose most of the question before they get a chance to cam over to get a decent volume, and if someone near them happens to cough the host will be drowned out. With a stream the volume will be constant for everyone at least, voice degrades too rapidly.

Hi Sandy, I just love your enthusiasm There are quite a few places that do regular trivia events (REAL trivia, not automated). I also do trivia on my land (just for fun- no establishment or anything there) where I give prize money and sometimes other prizes per question and also have a pot that everyone donates to that goes to the player with the most correct answers at the end. IM me in world sometime and I can give you the names of some great trivia places and invite you to join my trivia group for notices of my trivia games. Oh, and welcome to SL! Hey, Sandy! Just chiming in to say that the club where I work has Trivia on Wednesday and Thursday nights as well. We started out with a trivia machine, but it wound up being easier to use chat. First one in the chat log with the correct answer gets a point.
I also have a free trivia machine I picked up at the GNUbie store, but it drives me nuts because it doesn't tell you the correct answer if nobody guesses! I want to know, darn it! lol
As far as your second question, gestures aren't hard to find, or to make yourself. I hardly ever use them, except for a few that our club hands out to hostesses. (welcome, dance machine, dress code, etc) I don't care for the silly gestures much. The ones with sounds bug me, but I can tune them out. The ones that fill the chat screen with six or eight lines of text... cute once, and then - arrgh! Worse than group IMs, because at least I can filter those out.

From: someone Not until they add the ability to turn off the positional voice feature You can change that in preferences, and actually, voice range is larger than chat range.
