So - Free for Good has a few members now (thanks!) and its first home base in Second Life!

Thanks to Rime Wirsing, for donating a 512 to house the freebie finding HUD and some of the more widely used beneficial free items for all of Second Life.

So, we need more members, and we need ideas. We don't have a logo yet. We need also, people who want to distribute free items and people who'd like to receive them.

Ideas on how to work the group, how to implement things, carry them out, etc. are also very welcome. I thought we'd start simple and things could change a bit as or when needed.

For right now, the plan is that group chat is closed, and people who want their free item to be distributed would send it to an officer or an owner, who would try and make sure the item is 'legal' i.e. made by the person or an item that is free for anyone to distribute full perm. The officer or owner would then send it out in a group notice. Pretty simple, really.

And then Rime's HUD will take people from location to location in SL with quality freebies.

So also if you have a place you want listed on the HUD, send Rime a landmark. Places ideal for this HUD would be ones that are easy for newbies especially, to navigate (walk around and find things), and which have higher quality free items. In other words, we're trying to shy away from the enormous places that haven't changed items since 2005...

Thanks in advance for any and all help or ideas in this venture.

PS The (for now, empty) home base and the group are available in Search. Type Free for Good.

Melita, you can create a "quality freebies" telepack for the wikiTiPi HUD (all residents can add locations, creator has mod rights).

I actually missed this whole discussion otherwise I'd have mentioned it sooner.

Pardon me if I am uncertain of all the details (I've just finished a very long day of work)...

Are you planning on hosting Freebies that have a direct usefulness/purpose for the general SL population?

or

Provide landmarks to in world locations where such Freebies exist?

I presume that what you'll be provided are Freebies of a non typical nature -- in other words, items that can't be found at Yadni's, Free Dove (I believe that's the name or similar), or every major creator's sample Freebie?

The SALT HUD would be fabulous, as well as various other tools, landmark lists etc.

Pardon me that I'm just trying to get a sense of what this is for -- apart from trying to fill a much needed niche at the latest XStreet debacle.

And this one:

So...

As the proposed item seems to be something inworld, what is it offering that is not akin to the above?

To answer Elric and others - yes, on pretty much all counts :)

The Free for Good home location (and satellite spots in future if it proves popular) will provide an in world location where items like the SALT HUD and of a similar nature can be obtained directly. There will not be a plethora of freebie boxes, but rather a collection of those more unique but valuable items, many of which will be displaced from 'that other place'.

The HUD will contain a list of popular, quality freebie locations specifically those run for the public good rather than as a draw to commercial ventures.

The availability of items for distribution and location inclusion on the HUD list will be at the makers/owners discretion and we will seek their approval. Suggestions or offers for each are welcome.

If anyone's desperate to get the freebies mentioned on Olila's blog or the Mermaid diaries before Rime's HUD is ready (great idea, btw) you can paste the URLs into the form at http://www.wikitipi.com/add_pages.htm and it'll load the locations onto your wikiTiPi HUD from the web.

Or click on the links below:

Great questions Elric and I appreciate each post in this thread. :)

To answer your questions: Yes, the idea is that the freebies meant for the good of the general population will have a home and can easily be found in one location. (The items at the so far small in world location would be the 'big' items people find very useful, like SALT Hud, and various basic building materials, etc.) If they are being pulled off XStreetSL listings due to the new 'freebie listing fees' that would be a loss to the community. So, this is one way to keep them going.

It is also a group for people who pulled their freebies off XStreetSL or who otherwise have quality freebies they wish to share with the rest of SL via the group. Those things will not be housed (in present plans) at the in world location, but will be distributed via the group itself to its membership. This will happen after the item has been submitted to an officer or owner, and has been vetted as well as possible to be 'legal' i.e. the person made it or it is a known full perm freebie.

We do and will strive to have freebies that are a bit different than the items to be found at many of the 'freebie malls' which mostly house very old things from 2005, 2006, etc. And not only fashion, but all types of things which people might find useful. (I haven't decided yet as to 'adult' items, that's a tricky one; but the new rules may very well prevent distribution of adult freebies anyway. Which would be fine by me.)

The SALT Hud will definitely be included and any other items people wish to see included permanently at the in world location, please anyone feel free to 'nominate' them. There are probably a lot I'm not aware of etc.

Rime came up with his freebie-finding HUD, which will be one thing available at the in world location. So also needed are in world locations of nice free items. Which places to include and why is still being discussed, so ideas and input are very welcome on that bit, as well.

So yes in summary, this is to cover the gap many of us feel will be left once people pull all or most 'freebies' from XStreetSL and also to give a permanent, and FREE way for people to distribute free items for the good of Second Life's community at large.

*phew* sorry if that was a bit wordy...and thanks Rime for answering, too; I wasn't on last night.
