I am totally amazed as to why i have been told i must update my viewer, the old one worked fine. NO CRASHES. I had to update my viewer to log in to SL today, and all i have done is crash, crash and crash. My question is WHY did i have to update to a viewer that does not work with a PC less than 6 months old?

It's a security update, and one that indeed should be mandatory. See the Release Notes at https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes#Release_Notes_for_Second_Life_1.20.17_Oct_6th.2C_2008 for details.
As for why it's crashing on your machine... no idea. I'm just downloading the corresponding RC version for Linux myself, and haven't tried it yet, so maybe we're all in for the same. On the chance that the problem is local to your machine, though, it could be worth trying to uninstall and re-install. |

The new viewer worked fine for me. Only problem is that my custom environment settings, which were saved, were gone - happened on a previous update too.

New viewer is working fine for me on Linux and Windows. I had to reload windlight setting though.
