Don't miss Q&A: Catching MONO tomorrow 1/28/08 & again 2/5/08
Sun Jan 27 09:51:52 2008

Linden Lab Studio Icehouse is now testing a simulator upgrade which will dramatically speed the running of scripts. The Linden Scripting Language ( LSL) will not change in any way, so all of your existing scripted objects and attachments will continue to function as before, only faster. The key to this improvement is an open-sourced virtual machine called Mono.

Babbage & Scouse Linden - Monday 1/28 at 7am PST
Periapse Linden - Tuesday 2/5 at 3pm PST

Visit the VTeam Blog for full details & SLurl

TMNT etc. at a hundred times the speed. ;)

I can hardly wait! This is an incredibly promising upgrade.

Though I'd feel sorry for any scripter that relied on the 'inherent speed' of LSL scripts in any particular way - imagine various activities sped up so fast, they would now be comical...

I feel the same way, though I admit that I have little confidence that they'll get it completely right before rolling it out grid-wide :(

Like Mono and Havok 4, I'm quite impressed by many of the things LL is doing from a technical standpoint lately, though I'm very disappointed by the fact that their QA process doesn't seem significantly better.

THAT is a VERY BAD image I now got in my head, Mr Shang! Thank you very much! ;)

(I have always thought the term "rutting" is very onomatopoetic anyway...)

A few more: WindLight (completely new rendering code, not just fancy skies, and it will replace the current viewer code at some future time), Dazzle (user interface enhancements in the viewer), new communications code (to improve the reliability and speed of IMs and texture rendering), and asset server reimplementation (about all I know is that they are working on it, no info on exactly what is being considered or when it might see the light of day). In six months, we're going to be looking at a radically different code base, and if it all works SL will be ready for another round of major growth.

When will I stop seeing gray cardboard for far far too long everywhere I go?

"Dazzle" iappears to be basically a supposedly better color scheme. I say supposedly because it uses gradient, shaded backgrounds for text, which means that if one color value in the background is at the optimum value for being a legible background given the color of text that's displayed on it, the rest aren't. The backgrounds of some of the text in the sample picture are pastel gradients with white letters, a combination that's extemely illegible, so they attempt to compensate for that by adding an outline to the letters, f which adds up to being less legible and harder to design and slower to display than a simple uniform color background with a properly contrasting color of text, like the nice plain text entry box I'm writing this post in.

To really make the interface more satisfying to users the interface should be made more customizable, easily customizable, without restarting the program or having to edit an XML file and enter a lot of number, allowing folks to set background color, text color, text font, and text size, and other such things. That would greatly benefit folks with impaired vision, and let people make the interface look at least somewhat they way they want it to look instead of the way one or two Lindens and a few users feel it ought to be.

There was a post in another thread where someone (I think Brenda Connolly) said they weren't spending much because they had most everything they could want, a feeling I'm sure is pretty common.

Mono might cause that to change a bit, since scripters will be able to make new, cooler programs, they might make stuff that's new and neat enough to entice some folks who've been holding on to their money to open their purses again.

It took a couple tries to get the login page to load.

I've gotten a script to fail. That's good.
