Render Reflections

There's an "experimental" feature in the Client/Render menu and/or Debug Settings that supposedly renders environmental reflections. It's not generally recommended, as LL says that it crashes some video cards.

I tried it last night. (Using an EGA Nvidia 8800 GS card with 320 MB RAM). It does indeed make my patent leather shoes reflect their surroundings (cool!)

However, when I tried to make a mirror and see if it would render my avatar's reflection, I couldn't construct a prim that was reflective. Since my shoes worked as mirrors, surely it should be possible to texture a prim so as to be highly reflective.

Any ideas?

When I first tried it months ago, I was able to see my relfection but from an extreme angle. They have since changed it and I can no longer see my own reflection.

**EDIT**
I noticed there is an option to increase resolution of the rendered reflection which is pretty cool to clear them up. Still can't see myself anymore though. :(

When it was first introduced, it was really kewel but caused a lot of lag. Fortunately I took a snapshot of what it looked like.

I would like to see it return to this degree, but it is not worth the lag associated. Maybe Windlight will be an exciting improvement.

The angle of incidence and angle of reflection are completely wrong as implemented now, and as a result you have to position your camera quite oddly to see your avatar's reflection. As I racall, I had to be quite a ways behind my avvie, and well to one side, to see her reflection. In short... it doesn'y make a good mirror at all, yet. But it has promise, if they ever get back to working on this, instead of on things like Voice Chat and Windlight.

Dis was a shot I took way back when of shiny: the gazing ball in the middle

Unfortjnately, I dun remember where it is in the debug settings any more, which is a shame, cuz I actually was lookin' for 'em the other day. What's the path?

Unless they have some super clever code running reflections, you're going to see a major strain to your GPU.

Not to mention, once this technology is implemented...every Joey-Bag'o-Donuts is going to want to make all their stuff reflective...we'll be living in a house of mirrors before long. And in a real-time rendered world...that spells disaster.

I like the idea...and if they can profoundly optimize it, it would work. Besides, we all know how cool games became when [real-time] reflections entered into the picture...before physics and HDRI mind you--so why are Havok and Windlight leading the race in new features?

Backwards if you ask me.

where does one find this at?

I looked under the client menu, am I looking in the wrong place?

I find that reflections work better on curved surfaces. Flat planes used to work, but the last time I tried, I got nothing.
