blech was building and things were running slow, so decided to relog... looked here while waiting for it to load... guess what...

I managed to log in... but...am totally grey and things are loading super slow...

Do you remember the update a couple of years ago that had ALL of SL (objects, AVs, Land) grey for like a week while huge amounts of crap was dowloads pending?

OMG yes but if you recall a year ago he had a period of a few days "GREY LIFE" was at one of its worse moments.. What is strange is you would think by know LLAB would have solved this trendy color

I'm getting ping sim stats of 5000 msec + !!!!

As usual, the tech stuff is over my head and I haven't a clue what that means... however - last night Lagsville reigned supreme. It got better around 9 pm PST but around 6 I had to leave Falln- normally a slow place for me regardless - as absolutely impossible to deal with.

I truly hope it is not symptomatic of the new viewer...

Please all bear in mind that a server patch was being applied over the 8 + 9th APR 2008. While rolling restarts were supposed to ensue, said restarts were delayed and, as far as the blogs indicated, have not been put into effect yet. I expect your problems are as a result of the server patch being applied. Things should return to normal after the rolling restarts (whenever they be). For now I find clearing cache and relogging clears up a few problems.

Ping time is simply the amount of time it takes to get from A to B back to A again in this case from the viewer to the sim and back to the viewer.

If your ping is 5000ms = 5s then if you press forward, the sim won't know you did until 2.5 seconds after (for simplicity's sake assuming that the to/from time is equally laggy) and you won't see yourself start to move for an additional 2.5 seconds still. You'll also get rather bad "rubberbanding" (snapping back in place when moving) as a result since the viewer keeps you moving at your last velocity in absence of any information from the sim.

That gives you smooth movement as long as the viewer hears back from the sim regularly, but the longer it's out of touch the less what's on your screen will match how/where things really are and the bigger the disconnect (snapping back) gets when the viewer does get an update.

(No packet loss or high pings for me in-world btw)
