Is there are reason why most store landmarks send you to a spot just outside the front of the shop? Why not just TP you to a spot inside the store? Is it just an SL tradition?

I have mine outside in case someone tp's in while in fly or hover mode (some ppl do that so as to not land with a whomp) hehe, so when they tp in they are just outside the door, not stuck in a floor or ceiling etc)

That's where their visitor counter is.

The reason I would suggest doing it is to not be dropping new customers right on existing who decided to just "shop" from the landing point. Rezzing just outside the door makes you feel like you should walk forward towards the shop. Dropping right in the shop would result in the tendency to not move off the landing point.

Busy landing points can get really really laggy, so I kind of assumed that's why some of the big stores make us walk a mile to get there. Or maybe they just want people to see their pretty buildings?

Having the TP point not actually in the store reduces the n00b-bump factor for customers.

A large/popular store may also be playing host to a number of smaller stores (Dazzle has ex-Dazzle-now-Last Call store, but also houses Lyra Muse's store for instance, and a Ginny-Starley collaborative store, ETD used to - still does? - offer a side-store for a month to new designers, etc).
Landing outside the main store means that 9 out of 10 people are looking straight at the store they want (they just have to walk towards it), and the odd one looking for the smaller store isn't too inconvenienced and there's the odd chance that any visitor may stumble onto/spot the smaller store. That's my wild guess anyway . |

If someone is browsing items in the store you don't want someone else to land on them.

People WILL stay at the landing point and shop using camera controls if the landing point is inside the store. Arriving at stores that do it like that is always annoying. I much prefer being dropped a few meters from the front entrance, where I can rez and rebake my missing images before going in.

We put our landing point in the middle of the store. The store is on a platform in the water - we don't want them to take a wrong step while stuff is still rezzing for them and fall in the water.

My store is kinda divided into three smaller sections - Elgyfu's Poses, Elgyfu's Emporium and SCA Prefabs, plus I have Helix and Stevo's Music in the same area - so I have the landing point in the middle of the square, as I don't know which one of the buildings the visitor wants - or even if they want to come and play on the island and not shop at all.

The RL habit of using the entranceway to entice customers is probably stuck in most seller's subconscious, so they plop you where the front door and sign are.

Another reason is you can increase traffic on 2 parcels for the price of one

I prefer to land outside of a store and walking in for several reasons. One I don't like the claustrophobic feel of always being indoors. Two, I just like that traditional feel of walking into a store. Three, I just like seeing the neighborhood, which I'm not as likely to do if I land directly inside the store. If a store is surrounded by nothing but ugliness, though, I understand why they would have the TP point be inside.

I think it's part of crafting an immersive experience. Landing in the middle of a store could be seen as kinda... 'bla.'

Is there are reason why most store landmarks send you to a spot just outside the front of the shop? Why not just TP you to a spot inside the store? Is it just an SL tradition? Yes, people go to a great deal of trouble Building doors, and it would be Silly to let them go to waste. Angel. |
