Ok...so I get all enthused about making videos.....and whilst I figured out the basics of windows movie maker...it turns out the program is about as jumpy as a cat on a hot tin roof. Holy smokes.....it loves to freeze up whenever one tries to apply any command what so ever..... After checking out a few reviews on the program....turns out this is pretty standard for it. Joy. Rather then sentencing my entire new endeavor to doomsville....I will ask thoust gurus what possible alternative there might be for editing video clips? I use xFire to get my footage and that's easy so I'll stick with it......but is there another program I can download besides movie **%$%#@#@$ maker? (for free, perhaps?) If so...please advise....while I'm really enjoying my current project idea...I think if I have to stop & start Blondie's 'Rapture' one more time...I'm going to have a seizure.

Nothing good out there for free. You should get Sony Vegas. It's not free but I heard there are some friendly pirates from Sweden looking to give away a few copies.

For editing, you could try MPEG Streamclip, here: http://www.squared5.com/It does come in Mac and PC versions. Can't vouch for the PC one, but I use the Mac one a lot for editing movies. Very simple to use. And it is free.

Pretty much any other program will work better for you. Movie Maker is free and AFAIK not open source so the quality and features list are pretty lacking. I use Vegas, personally. There's also Corel, Premiere and a bunch of other good quality programs out there though. I'd look around at reviews and prices and try to find the one that fits what you need and what you can afford the best. Those three I listed are a good place to start.

The Geek uses Sony Vegas too. It's extremely powerful, and not that hard to use.
Did I say extremely powerful? This is a full-blown video editing program, MUCH more than you need just for making machinimas for the web. Kind of like buying Photoshop to do a little cropping on a few snapshots you took with your phone camera. But if you are interested in video, Vegas or a program like it is a great tool.

doom9.org often has lists of free/low-cost video editing software (mostly intended for dvd editing, but some usable stuff besides). some of it is not very user friendly though.

I use Sony Vegas 9 Media Studio Pro Platinum, it was $99. It came bundled with a DVD authoring tool and two audio apps, one an editor and the other a music generator. I bought it for my hi-def camera and the surround sound editing feature. It is limited compared to the full version like it does not allow scripting and its limited to 4 tracks of video and audio each but its still way more than the average person would ever need. The full version runs around $600. Debugmode WAX is the most powerful free editing tool I've found but it very bare bones in the UI. It has hundreds of FX and transitions that if you were to buy them for Sony Vegas 9 or Adobe you would be shelling out thousands of dollars.
