I've been pondering getting some land again for years, and I just can't make a decision. This is not so much a matter of the subject matter as a personal problem with making choices.
I can get a 512 mainland parcel and pay 5 dollars a month to Linden Lab without any other fees to Linden Lab, just the sale price paid to the current parcel owner. There are some low priced parcels around, although they are all on the new mainland continents, so far as I can tell from looking at the underpowered Land Sales search function.
There's parcels for rent for 350 a week, which comes out to roughly 5 dollars a month.
The Land Sales search's limitations make the process of shopping very slow and tedious. After twenty minutes of going from parcel to parcel to read covenents I give up. I've been doing this for years.

If you only get 512 land then you dont have to pay anything to LL besides your monthy monthly membership your first 512 is free
Ohh and if it has a covenent its estate land not mainland and you would be paying the tier to the estate owner not LL

Well, if you pay yearly the 512 sqm tier works out to a little over one dollar a month is you assume a $300L stipend. You might have to pay a little more for a good parcel ina good sim but its worth it.
I bough my 512 sqm parcel in mooaleo by first finding sims i liked and then looking for parcels. I did not rely too much on the land search mechanism.
Good luck.

If you pay annually the cost is around US$6 per month but you get most of that back in weekly stipend.

I don't have to be premium to buy land. I'm special.
People with start dates of a certain range, who paid the 9.95 dollar lifetime fee, can buy land without being premium. I can buy a mainland 512 s.m. parcel and pay the seller and then pay LL only 5 dollars a month. I don't get the 300 a week payment, of course, just the 50 linden per week payment.
Going premium at 72 bucks a year is yet another option I could do, which makes it even harder to make a decision. I've been including that option in my thoughts for years as well. That has the benefit to me of not having to remember anything, pay once, no further thought required.
On systems that require me to pay weekly I might forget to pay a find my stuff back in my inventory.
Before getting into a pay LL deal, I'd probably need to update my credit info, which probably has bad card numbers since I lose my cards so often. I've been meaning to do that for months.

Her rezz day is likely before that. I don't know what her monthly/quarterly/ annual premium membership is............but, I've heard the membership in the early days of SL were lower than they are now. $5 a month just might be her monthly fee. On the stipends, I'm sure she gets at least as much as I do.......$L500 a week. Suzanne, come to Philudoria. Quiet mainland sim with lots of 512 to 2048 meter plots for sale. Also a lot of Linden protected land to isolate you from neighbors being right on top of you. In fact the whole continent is relatively quiet. OOOPS!!! Guess I'm wrong about that stipend..............LOL

I'm right with you on the painful process of searching for land, it's really bad. Search - teleport - groan at the mainland mess - search - teleport - sigh at the mainland mess...etc. Honestly, for me renting is a better deal. For the same price I can get a lovely quiet spot and no chance of spinny sex ads going up next to me. And then there's the question of traffic. Is it even important anymore? Does it really matter where you are located? I'm not so sure it does.

*shameless plug* I have a lot in the sim of Shermerville for $350L a week. If you decide to rent mainland, it doesn't get any nicer than Shermerville. But......
Buying a 512 somewhere on the mainland is your best though. You'll get a 512 included in your premium membership, so besides the purchase price of the lot, you'll have no extra fees other then your premo membership if you stick with a 512. Nows a great time to buy since mainland dropped so much.

Now I'm once again looking at the map. There's a heck of a lot of sims on the map! Some of the private estates are big enough to look like mainland areas. It's hard to tell since to get the map to display you have to leave the map up and go out to eat or watch or movie and check it when you get back.
Once the map loads, it offers no real information to make one square seem better than another.
It would almost be nice to have a land lottery. Just set the price range you want to pay for one weeks rent, let the system pick one at random and then go see what you are stuck with. At least you wouldn't haven't to figure out whether you are making a good choice or not.
I'm not building in the sandboxes much anymore, essentially zero, which I used to do a lot, building and writing my tiny scripts. You used to be able to work there, but every time I try that some troublemaker spoils it one way or another. So have I just lost the desire to build and script in general, or would having a reasonably secure parcel make it more fun? Also some of the things that are interesting to do in scripting require that be the owner of the land, so owning some land might improve the fun of scripting.
Part of me wants land in old sim, near Ahern and Lusk and such, for sentimental reasons, but the prices there are rather high.

I don't know what to do either Suzanne. I wish I had the old land I had before I went to sleep and lost every thing. I also wish had been more awake when the lifetime deal was available, been pondering what to do myself if I should go premium. Sarah, I actually tried to go visit the land but something went awry I want a roadside lot like what is in West Haven but I am not willing to spend 200 usd or more for 512m lot. I do have space that my friends and other alt shares with me but sometimes I like my own place to get away sometimes.

(another shameless plug) I rent a huge amount of land in the Ryder estate. This is a plug because I've been an estate manager since the estate was just one sim Anyway I've been there for about a year now I guess, and the only other option I would consider going with is owning a sim of my own. The price is very fair, there's enough "empty" land to allow everyone a prim bonus, and there are enough admins to keep the greifers under control. The smallest normal sized parcels are 1024sqm and something like $L550 per week. I'm not sure of the price exactly, I have two parcels in two sims paid for together from one rent box, it's kind of hard to tell ;P You can also request a void sim according to the owner's profile, which is something new. Do a search from the map for "Ryder" and they'll all come up. Jungle and Asylum are theme build sims, Park, Manor, and Haven are not and all have normal parcels available. Shoot me an IM in world and I'll show you around my dragon cave and Jupiter if you like

From: Dagon Grimm I also wish had been more awake when the lifetime deal was available,
Same here. It ended not long after I joined. I had no idea I'd be around for years. Money was tight then.

Sue I am confused by your question but that is nothing new. I am always confused. I have owned land all over the place and my most recent holding is totally free since it is 512 sm with another 512 contibuted by my partner. Wirh our weekly SL welfare checks we not only have free 1024 sm of land but we are playing free forever as long as both of us sell about 20,000 lindens each year. It is on the mainland.
Are you asking where the good land is? I would advise against looking at private sims as most of that land looks like something out of "Edward Scissorhands." I found some great land in Griffin and I bet there are many many more places if you look around.
Good luck old friend!

Suzanne, the place Sarah mentioned is gone I snatched it up. It was good deal for me 350 a week on road in old sim but man I can't believe the prices people sell West Haven and Shermanville NW for so 350L a week or 1400L a month is good deal I got when most of land they want 200 usd just to buy for 512m. That ridiculous. If you go yearly premium do old time members get anything else special?

There's a 1/3 a sim of 1024's in the sim east of Desire that are for sale for only $9500 each. I seems to be a stable nice quiet sim. There's also a 512m south of me but it was overpriced.
