I couldn't use the newest version of the viewer. Crashes every time unceremoniously at start up. I mean EVERY time. I wonder if the following problems are related to my using the old viewer:
My tier/rental is due and I cannot find the landlord in search. If I key in his last name I get a lot of the first names that start with "A" then it peters out. I've almost pulled up stakes and undone months of work thinking the island was going to disappear under me. Now I hear search may have been broken, but I still can't find him now. Other people I know do show up in search. I do hope he is okay in RL.
Should I:
1. Keep trying to reload the new version and if by some miracle it works see if he's in the newer search feature in time to pay him. (It's due on the 7th but I usually pay him the 1st.)
2. Begin packing my build for fear it will all disappear and start looking for another parcel. ( I was considering this anyway, though the landlord and neighbors have all been great.) I wonder how long I have before the island sinks like Atlantis.
3. Be patient and see what happens. Save up for a new computer.
4. All of the above.
Thanks. I'm a little rattled by this. -- KC

Does the landlord have an object in the sim, like a rento, or anything else? If so, you could go into edit, click on the 'profile' button by his name as owner, and IM him from there.

I would keep trying to contact your landlord, and at the same time pack up, a backup of your build.
If you like the parcel, and call it home, then stays put and wait, IMHO
Is there a rental box? Or do you pay the land owner direct?
Also, is it on the Mainland or a private sim?
If its mainland and has a rental box, I would continue to pay as normal.....
A private Sim......that’s a different story, Mainland doesn’t disappear if the land owner does. If it goes to Linen land you have a chance to buy it at auction.
If you are planing to move anyhow, then I guess now would be the time....

No, this has nothing to do with using an old viewer or old search. However, search/asset handler have been a little rocky the last couple of days ... I would go to a different, very lag-free sim and try looking him up again before panicing. If you do move, look for a place that at least provides you with direct email contact for your landlord, and hopefully with more than one avatar to talk to inworld (some sort of support staff in addition to the landlord). To depend so much on a single avatar's account remaining healthy at all times is risky ...

There's no rental box. The land appears in my name. I just pay the estate owner tier directly - and no, it's not on mainland. The island is not laggy.
I think he's canceled his account. I am definitely making sure all my builds are backed up. And some items I bought, no copy, I'm taking back into inventory. Thanks for the input.. -- KC

Thanks for the input.. -- KC Might be other things. One, if credit card fraud is reported to the sim owner's credit card company, often they report to our service provider here, who immediately shuts down the account until there is an investigation. Even if the credit card dispute is over something entirely unrelated, such as an erroneous charge for dog treats. Second, if the sim owner got some $L that was part of a fraud investigation - similar thing. Third, there are some gambling 'triggers' or something in the game, such that if your avatar pays certain amounts rapidly to others, wham, you are disabled. Happened to a good, reliable sim owning friend of mine when he innocently passed $L 1000 to a friend. Boom, gone, and then finally restored in the morning after some calls. Or it could be payment issues on the part of your landlord, or he coulda just taken the money and run. Who knows? Quite frankly, I'm a bit worried myself that one day I'll wake up and find a frozen account. I have over $L 2 million go through my account every month, and as far as I know just ONE $L obtained by fraud and then passed to me without my knowledge would make me part of any investigation. Since I'm not doing anything fraudulent I'm sure that it's nothing that a phone call couldn't fix. But I hope people don't think I skipped the grid if my account was ever frozen pending some random investigation. Yet I have other contacts via gchat and so forth, so people won't have to look too far to find me. Does your landlord have any other means of contact? That might be a little telling, right there.

I just wanted to know how quickly I should act, but I guess one wouldn't just abandon an entire island estate, and he has several others that he rents too. Some of the neighbors have said they would IM him, but I have no other way to contact him other than by search and drop the tier into his profile. Guess I'll sit tight and not run off in a panic. But I am still backing up stuff. . . . -- KC

search around the sim for land or objects in his name You should be able to bring up his profile from them
Also if he has ever given you any notecards or objects he created you should be able to bring up the creators profile

Guess what!

This problem really did spring from not using the new viewer. I tried one more time to install the latest viewer and I was able to log in! I searched in People, but still no landlord. I tried All and there he was! So this is an instance where the old viewer really doesn't work properly.
I like the new search for it's larger profile format. Not sure why people are not showing up in People, but no problem now. I'm paying the guy right away . . . Jeez!
Now to rebuild some of what I took back. --KC

Geez, I must be one of the few landlords who doesn't evict if payment is a few days late. I've lived my entire life a few days late..its what expect from people.
I would definitely contact my tenant if there was a payment problem before doing anything harsh or permanent to their SL home!

I give a two week grace period. But after that, expect a real wrist slapping!
