If SL gets much slower, laggier, will the Lindens have to stop pretending Second Life is functional? I've given up trying to make anything, everything just takes too much longer than it used to.

make sure you dont have an old version running in the background. turn your draw distance down to 128 meters. make sure you dont have too many things running in the background...including browser windows will lag your SL. Have you defragged your harddrive lately?

Eh, I just upgraded my internet, so I've got almost CSI:Turbo D/Ling now. Thats about the best you can hope for, with as much content is stored server side, rather than client side (as most of the MMORPGs I've played have.)

:) Shiney shiney, I went from 5meg to 15meg and wow, difference is amazing! Gotta love fiber optics.

O.o I have crappy internet ('high speed' wireless provider, so its not so great and lags like crap alot at random times) and even in some of the worst times, I can build fine and such. Uploads might not always work, but I'm fine with that as long as I can build.. maybe its not SL being that bad.. its slowed down lately, but not so much I can't create... o.o

You might try shutting your modem off and back on if you haven't already tried that.

Yes but we now have voice and many other new features that make us forget how crappy SL has become.

i use a great little freeware proggie called 'end it all'.
download - http://www.casarosa.ca/EndItAll2.zip

end it all is similar to the taskmanager, where you can close processes off. but end it all allows you to save a list of processes to close and/or 'protect' from closing. so i periodically launch end it all, click 'kill' then watch a dozen unwanted processes get killed off. my memory usage is typically reduced from 600Mb to 200Mb.

i HIGHLY recommend this app!

Probably not LL fault we are running 1000's of bots 24/7 programmed to log in and out or tp from sim to sim constantly searching for land and camping pads or just cheating traffic figures. Probably not their fault half the population of non-bot online residents are longterm AFK and logged in 24/7 too

If SL gets any slower

Thanks for the computer tech suggestions, but i've been in sl a couple of years and am used to reducing everything to lowest possible settings when the grid is running slow already. As for all the bots, i do blame LL, they are the ones that made the decision in june of last year to allow all those unverified accounts that the horde of bots run off of. Before that we had free accounts but not unlimited unverified accounts. While i dont have the best system in the world, far from it, its the same system i always used for sl. Maybe its just me, dont think it is, but it seems as though the average day in and day out baseline for sl has gotten slower and slower. Its always had periods of horrible functionality mixed in with times it ran well. I just cant remember when the last time was that i could go to a concert and not lag/freeze or build something without having to wait and wait for textures to rez ect.

There has been an increased amount of lag lately, but even on my island where I purposfully stuck out laggy monsters for halloween, I'm still not noticing it enough to stop building or making things. You might want to try turning your graphics settings down inside Second Life if you haven't yet. That can help alot.

Also, your inventory has a HUGE effect on the lag you feel when in world. I've done tests with this, with an avatar with an inventory of 30,000+ and an avatar with an inventory of less than 8000. In the same area of my island, the big inventory avatar could barely move, type, fly, or anything else she should be able to, nearly crashing 3 or 4 times in 5 minutes, while my alt could do anything without a bit of lag at all. Absolutely none. Anyway, you might want to consider this too.

Honestly I upgraded the hell out of my computer when I stopped being able to run SL well...but it sucks that you would HAVE to do that to keep coming into SL with an acceptable experience.

When I close out SL and start a new window, sometimes the old one did not completely shut down and it will bog down the new SL window. I find the laggiest moments were explained by this. I did CONTROL ALT DELETE and clicked the PROCESSES tab.
