Has SL made you more 'paperless'?

For a long time we've been told that PCs and the internet will make our lives more paperless. That might be happening slowly but people still tend to print things out and we all still make notes and receive lots of junk mail.

But it dawned on me that my Second Life has been almost entirely paperless. I do have a sheet of paper with all my appearance slider settings listed - just in case of disaster. That was also useful for re-creating my SL appearance in OpenSim grids. But that's all, so SL has taught me to be more paperless. How about other peoples' experiences?

Actually, it made me use more paper. There are so many things that I come across where I say, oooh, gotta check that out, but don't have time right now. So I jot it down on a notepad. Names, places, stuff and such, or quick settings/sizes while building. And when organizing picks camping, for me nothing beats an old-fashioned desktop calendar, the weekly ones you can flip around. ;)

No, I have a pile of notes about things I come across. Settings, things I have to do, names...the list goes on. Jackie

My SLife is more or less paperless, but then I don't have a great deal to keep track of. If I was running a larger business, there might be paperwork involved, especially if I was dealing with real money.

Either way, it's not made me use less paper in life as a whole. It's just not generated any *new* paperwork.

I guess I could say it uses less paper than my other pursuits. I use the My Notes tab in my profile as an in world to do list. That combined with landmarks allow me to not have to use paper in the real world for SL.

Plus it has taken time away from other hobbies that did use more paper. I'm not sure if this is a good or a bad thing.

I keep notes on my desktop notepad LOL

I try to be paperless where SL is concerned.....so if I want to save information, and I don't want the risk of losing a notecard from my inventory....I simply transfer things to a saved notepad file on my desktop. This way I can open it while I'm logged into SL......and I can refer to it later when I'm doing a creative project, and not logged in. If I do an Ad for someone, I'll put the details on the notepad so I don't have to log into SL to refer to notecards. ;)

But, that said....I am also a true believer of paper files for certain things. I have never once accidentally deleted my hand written address book. And I keep a note pad in my desk droor with cryptic notes on scattered pages to help remind me of passwords and other important details I need.....and cannot afford to lose, delete, or otherwise sacrifice to the glitches of technology.

I also believe firmly in 'gray matter' filing. There's a lot of stuff in my brain that comes in very handy when my cell battery dies......or I need to get directions while on the road. Or a good recipe.....or a birthday......or a friends favorite drink.....the gray matter system works just fine. :D

I sometimes put notes on the notes section of my profile - like things that need to be done - or I suppose I could use notecards or put notes on Word documents.

Entirely Paperless.

Also practically eliminated a stack of RL paper......dry cleaning receipts.....clothing receipts....cell phone receipts....gas receipts....car wash/maintenance receipts....hair cutting receipts.....an entire Tree has been saved.

Thank You SL from a Tree Hugger.

I actually use a notecard or two inworld to keep track of most things -- check this sim, check this store, sale at that store. Only keep a few notes on my desk.

However, I am working on some changes to my house and as I am not really a builder, I have scribble notes with various measurements and calculations all over my desk right now.

The SL notecard is archaic. If LL really wants business to flourish on this 'platform' they really should make the notecard much more dynamic (insert spreadsheets, shared editing, underlining, column, numbering, password etc.)

Thank goodness for Google spreadsheet and calendar

I keep a pad on my desk for scribbling things all the time. Mainly designer/creator names to look up and visit and sim names.

I suppose one could just send themselves a snapshot with a note. Send it to a web based email address and you can read your notes from within SL away the home.

I use Ordinal's tweeter script to make notes of things to check out again.. and if I am not in world, then I send myself emails.

But I still use paper so that I can make my smores.. :)

"paperless?" nah, when I took inactivity in SL i realized that I used so much paper, from taking down Journals before I opened my blog, to drawing out ideas when I return.

Unless your talking about US$ to L$?

The better quality ones are, but not all.

I've got a filing cabinet full of SL related paperwork, mostly transaction and business records for the past 5 years but also sketches and designs for every thing from plant pots to full custom built sims.

paperless sl
05-03-2009 05:13
Ever since i started in sl i wrote things down...how to do things, little shortcuts, people i met and places of merit i went to. I tagged this to the SL book for dummies. I keep this information all in a big hard backed notebook by the p.c. It's my point of reference, to all the things I should know, but usually forget. It also helps with inventory sorting too, so I know what can be trashed without missing it. I rate landmarks for return, people to put on ignore/delete shitlist and best clothes places for best deals. I find this 'reference' book, which is now nearly 3 years old is my bible and I continually refer to it and update it...Without it, the SL life I have, becomes even more confusing than it already is....

I can't imagine using paper to make my notes - can't cut-and-paste names and addresses to and from dead trees.
