IM problems with one specific person?

For the last two days or so, I've been having a lot of trouble trying to communicate with one specific person. It's intensely frustrating as it's one of my best and closest friends. What's happening is I can send her IMs and they seem to get through, but when she replies or IMs me, I get nothing. If I'm off-line, sometimes (like, once) it got through to my email, but if I'm online, there is zilch, nothing, they don't get to me, and they don't get to my email either. I've already made sure I didn't accidentally mute her, and to be sure, I cleared my whole mute-list incase somehow one of the entries on there was magically affecting her. That didn't help.

We've also set up so we can see each other on the map, and that's not working either - when I look on the map, it shows her as being offworld (extreme south-west corner, right off the map). When I look on the friends online website, the map link doesn't work there either -- the link is there but there is no region name given, just coordinates.

It's like some extra special borkedness is just targetting me, or her. I can get IMs fine from other people, and group IMs. I can communicate with her by using a group IM session in a group that we're both in.

It's really upsetting me and I don't know what's happened to cause it or how I can fix it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could check or look into, to try and find out what's happening? Thank you!

if it's HER messages that aren't getting thru to YOU, have her check to see whether she's muted you.

This is probably an obvious suggestion, but have you accidentally muted your friend? You can look at your mute list - I can't remember how at the moment and I'm not in world to check, I hope someone else will chime in. It's surprisingly easy to accidentally mute someone.

I believe she already checked her mute list.

If you can't see her IMs, but she can see yours, could it be because you are using different viewers?

Is she having any similar issues communicating with anyone else?

How about you both try clearing your caches? It almost sounds like a copy of one of your keys has gotten corrupted somewhere.

I had a similar problem once...I ended up having to delete my friend from my friends list and then offer friendship again. That seemed to fix it.

I had this happen a while back.....it seemed like I was suddenly muted in IM's.....I hadn't muted anyone or visa versa....but nothing I typed was showing up. After re-logging a few times the issue ultimately corrected itself.....and I never did find out what the actual cause was..... but it happened on a few different occasions......and then.....it never happened again. I wonder if it isn't some kind of corruption in the viewer you are using....or that she's using. Perhaps getting rid of the viewer and reinstalling it would help.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll try clearing my cache and see how that goes.

I did already check my mute list and in fact cleared it completely 'just in case'.

Interestingly, I've had the problem while using two different computers (at home and at work) and two different viewers (1.19.1.RC4 & 1.18.5)

*blinks* auugh, that's embarrassing. I read the OP twice to make sure I wasn't suggesting something she'd already tried, but there it is. I'm sorry!

hmmm so it's not the cache and not the viewer. Problem COULD be on her end ... or ... puzzling.

I have this problem too with some people.

I also have an issue on the Friends Online where I am shown as ALWAYS online to my partner. Doesn't upset me but he doesn't trust the system any more after loads of sunny greetings to me when I am really snoring.

I have an e-mail address in my SL name that I give to friends in-world, so if anything goes screwy we can still keep in touch.

I don't know if she has Restrained Life - but if she did, wouldn't that affect my messages to her and not her messages to me? Or can Restrained Life prevent you from sending IMs?

One thing that's occured to me is it might have something to do with the regions - I've been in the same region for all of the failed communications attempts, and I am pretty sure she has been in the same region each time as well... I'm on an estate and she's on mainland.

I believe that it stops you from both receiving and sending until you log out and back into regular sl. I think the only person you can correspond with would be the Master.

Ah ok - well next time I get a chance, I will try and find out what viewer she is using. The one time we were able to talk (via a group IM session) she indicated that she did receive my IMs and had been sending replies.

Thanks again for all the help!

yeah, Restrained life, ITSELF won't block your IMs in or out, but one little attachment can do quite a bit. if she's into BDSM or fetish stuff, this could be related.

if you want to check real fast while she's on, just im her with this line:

@version

Normal clients won't do anything in response to that, and it'll just go through as an IM... however, Restrained Life (and Cool SL, and probably any others out there using RSL code) will respond automatically with a version number.

From the RSL API:
From: someone
* Manual version checking : "@version"

This command must be sent in IM from an avatar to the user (will not work from objects). The viewer automatically answers its version to the sender in IM, but neither the message nor the answer appears in the user's IM window, so it's totally stealthy.
