Hi guys,
I was wondering if the placement of prims in a sim has any effect on lag.
I am thinking of buying a sim, and I am designing my sim first. There are 15,000 prims with every new private island sim, and I was wondering if it mattered at all where they were all placed. For example, if I parcel my new sim into a 3x3 grid of 9 plots, and put all the 15,000 prims into just one of those parcels, from the ground up, would it be just the same if I spaced them evenly over the ground, or placed them evenly in 3D using the Sky as well up to 756m, or what?
Any difference in lag, or no difference in lag? (Hope I explained the query ok).
TIA

I'm no expert, but I don't think plain ol' prims cause lag, so I don't think it matters where you place them. Using lots of different textures on those prims can cause lag in terms of rezzing. Particle effects also cause lag.

Effect of prim placement on SIM-lag = Non-existant, or negligible.
Effect on prim placement on CLIENT-lag = dependant on client system.
If you put 15,000 prims in a 3x3 area, anyone going in there is going to "feel" lag as they render them all at once. If they're all textured with different high rez textures, then they're going to feel like walking through mollasses unless they have a cutting edge system.
Sim-lag and Client-lag are, and have always been, two sperate things.
Some prims can have more of an impact as well. 15,000 spheres will be a lot less rendering than 15,000 cut/hollowed/twisted torus (tori?). This has more to do with the polygon count than anything else. A quick look at wireframe (Ctrl+Shift+R) will let you see all the rendered polygons. The tighter the lines and the more of them, the more it's going to effect individual clients.
As for sims; I have noticed that huge, complex builds put up quickly in a sim can 'destabilise' it for a while. I have been told I'm wrong by coders and programers, and that this can not happen. *shrugs* I've seen it, so I'll believe it. imo, it takes a sim a few hours to "get used" to the prims. I've seen lag smooth out after a build is up and set for a time, even though it was horrendous during the building process.
Hope that meandering post helps *chuckles* ~Jessy

And a great deal depends on the number of avatars in the sim, as well...and if your sim abuts on another. The more prims you have on your sim, the more data your sim will be serving up to the visiting avatars, and those close enough and with their draw distance set far enough.
So, yeah...the number of prims on your sim DOES have a potential effect on lag.

And don't forget to think about the scripts in those prims when you use them.
So, lag is generated by a mix of different things. That's why it's also so difficult to bring lag down.

Actually, megaprims (but only these) *do* create lag if placed near a sim border or above Z=512. Zero Linden said so.
So if you use these, make sure that you keep them as near to the centre as possible and stay below 512m.
