I'm looking to buy a thing that lets you create particles and see them update live,

Does any one have a recommendation as to witch is best?

It can't be done directly because changing particle settings requires changing a script and waiting for it to compile. That means all particle utilities are limited to creating scripts for you, which you then copy and paste into a script editor.

At the risk of tooting my own horn, there's nothing I know of quite like Mote. It's easier to use than a HUD because you aren't limited to SL's interface, and it skips the copying part. You can read more about it at the web site in my sig.

I bought one of those, before I played with a particle script and found out how easy it is to manipulate those things.

Now I just play with the script and I never open that particle generator... whatever its name was.

My recommendation: forget the tool. Just play with the script and learn how to make and import PNGs with transparency. Then the sky's the limit.

If I can do it, you can to. (Not because I'm dumb... but because I'm so damn lazy.)

patently not true.... all that can be done dynamically in a script, and even spitting out a script with just those settings on demand... there were at least 2 available for sale last time I went looking.

What Void said; I got a hud recently at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Sea%20Atoll/115/121/1190 that lets me tweak particles in real time and it spits out a script when I tell it to.

But I must agree with Alvaro; you really are much better off learning a bit about how the various settings work by playing with -- for example -- the various free sample scripts available at The Particle Lab http://slurl.com/secondlife/Teal/180/74/21 and learning how to make your own textures for them. I hardly use the hud at all except to generate a preset (with one of the nice built-in textures) for me to play with manually.

Jopsy's Porgan?

I'll second that. The Porgan has made particles easy and you can see the changes live. It tells you when you are in particle overload and when you like the effect you've created you have the option of either creating a prim with effect or downloading the script off Jopsy's website.

Apologies, I stand corrected. I haven't looked at Porgon, which apparently I should. I have only the utmost respect for Jopsy -- it was the particle laboratory where I first started myself. I wish him all the best, and there is no doubt in my mind that he deserves a return on the incredible effort he's put into it over the years.

On the other hand, maybe I need to look into having Mote do that. :)
