It's happened to me while standing in front of the person. Normally a relog clears it up.

It happens randomly, though almost always if an IM comes while teleporting, and it happens cuz SL is totally wacked these days. This has been happening for a few months now -- probably after they messed something up while fixing things that did not need to be fixed in a server rollout.

Happens sometimes. I always figured it was during a teleport. I also had ims popping up after I had logged in several times. They seemed to be old messages. The first few times I responded to people they acted like I was insane and reminded me we had already had that conversation.
