Linden Lab, maker of the virtual world Second Life, is to shutter its doors within 60 days, and close down their platform. “We were starting to make some steady profits,” said founder and Chairman Philip Rosedale. He continued, “With as many as 85,000 users on line at any one time, and over a million dollars changing hands in our economy every day, this might sound like a pretty surprising decision. But we had a top management meeting last week, and we realized that Second Life really is for people with no first life. We just felt that we were doing a disservice to our customers. So at heart, this was a decision we made for ethical reasons. We created Second Life to make the world a better place. Now we need to dismantle it.”

According to Mark Kingdon, CEO of Linden Lab, the company plans to do everything they can to make the transition a smooth one. Linden Lab has secured an agreement with ex-IBM employee Ian Hughes, who is deeply involved in three-dimensional printing, to allow every user with a credit card number on file to make a three-dimensional figurine of their avatar as a memento. A special task force will be assigned to work with enterprises that have been using Second Life for distance collaboration. “We are going to help them transition into alternative platforms, like WebEx and Microsoft Live Meeting,” said Mr. Kingdon. “Unlike Second Life, these platforms actually work.”

“This won’t be an easy transition for many of our dedicated users,” said Mr. Rosedale. We wish them luck, and encourage them to buy plenty of sunblock to protect their skin as they explore the ‘first life’ around them.
