Now I know what you're saying.."You can't ask THAT question HERE..there's a Forum specially for THAT question..go away..shoo!! But you see I get more sense out of you guys..(someone asked the question in another forum, "Does anyone know how to make an SL movie"..of course the answer they got was.."Yes" )...which is why I'm asking my question HERE also. Has Torley Linden ever made a Tip of the Week video on how to make a movie in Second Life..coz I'd quite like to figure out how to do it and having searched the forum..I still don't know how. I'm willing to bet a five minute video by Torley would answer all my questions. Anyone seen one...? Astrid

There used to be a feature in the viewer that recorded video. Maybe if you find an older viewer that has that? Fraps is how most people do it. That is how I used to do it myself: http://www.fraps.com/ To do it Torley style you will need loud colored avatars and always say "Friendly Greetings" at the start. Also appear to be on speed at times when you speak. Good luck

i saw that response myself in the movie forums..no answer would have been better than the one that person gave..
i am looking to get back into making some movies myself..i'll have to look over my old tutorials i made to really give a good answer..getting the avi is not really the hard part ..the compression and editing and keeping the quality is..well more time consuming with the editing than anything..but compression if done right you can really see the difference.. as far as any torely tips i'm not sure myself..

Torley uses "Camtasia Studio" for the most part in his Video Tutorials.

You can use Fraps or Camtasia or any other program of that type. Torley uses Camtasia. Suppress UI = cntrl-alt-F1. It's useful to shoot in a window. Start with something small. Edit with anything from Windows Movie Maker to Adobe Premiere.
Start doing it, then when you have specific questions ask them on the forum.

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Torley_Linden/Vidtut_process for the gory details (well, as gory as Torley gets, which isn't very gory at all I suppose).

Fraps: about 37 bucks. Camtasia: about 300 bucks. How is your budget?

Sure it can. May not be as smooth as Fraps or the like because of the extra load the client puts on the computer. Depends on your PC. You can use Windows Movie Maker to edit free and upload to Youtube. I thought the movie to disc was gone.. maybe that is in the RC but I read that somewhere. Anyway.. depends on if you want to do it Torley style or Astrid style. Don't forget Astrid doesn't have the company credit card to buy the high end stuff Torley uses.

the movie to disk thing is quite slow, even on a beefy computer cause its doing per pixel at a minimum of 800x600
where as outside programs can do lower resolutions, and is mostly on a "scanline" basis, thus provide greater speed
the last time i did inworld video tho the best results i had were piping the vga output to another computer (tru pc ->hdtv, then hdtv -> pc)
which is an expensive venture if you dont already have the boxes, cards, and a spare pc laying around already

From: SuezanneC Baskerville The first three lines of this link explain why I've never got it to work on the original client and why it's 'just not there' on the new client. With all your comments (friendly thank you's to you all ) in mind I'm going to invest initially in Fraps and give it a try and if I turn out to be a fabulous SL movie director/creator then I'll flash the Amex and invest in Camtasia Thank you again..Astrid

Anyone used CamStudio to make SL videos? I just downloaded it and it seemed to work ok to make a short clip. It's a free one, available at http://CamStudio.org ;

I just uploaded the video made with CamStudio to blip.tv. The upload went quickly. I put the url for the avi in the parcel media url field and it's working. No conversions or other tedium.
I see in the Blip.tv TOS that they don't want video game uploads, and are wanting shows, shows that you make, not just random stuff like I'd be producing. Does the blip.tv TOS mean no SL machinima is allowed?

From: Astrid Schwade ..wonder how many movies could be knocked up in thirty days..hmm tempting! Fraps used to have a 30 day trial too.. so you *could* squeeze two months out of it. This proggie Suezanne posted above is really worth a look though, Astrid.

I suppose it depends on whether you think SL is a game..I personally think it's not..so SL machinima is allowed (at least from my perspective) I guess they'll let you know if you've misenterpreted, if they don't then that's just fine Astrid

I'll also add a vote for Fraps. VERY useful! Especially if you do any machinima or just like showing off vids of games.

Camtasia Studio is made by TechSmith. It is probably the best of its kind currently out there. BUT The same company also make Jing, which is a free application and has an automatic upload to on-line hosting spaces Screencast.com and Flickr, plus FTP and lcal file saving. See it at http://www.jingproject.com/I would seriously suggest taking a long look at Jing it really is a nifty piece of software and at that price you have nothing to lose.
