Is it still possible to 'orbit' an avatar?

I heard that the new Havok 4 regions have eliminated the 'orbit' capability that Havok 1 had.

Just curious - my only experience with orbiting was just once when I was visiting Mystical Cookie, and was dumb enough to press a big red button that said "DO NOT PRESS" on her land.

Has this curious part of the SL experience gone by the wayside?

Any truth to it, any exceptions? Please respond here, do not show me by example please...

There are a few different mechanisms - I would be surprised if all of them had been eliminated. In fact, given that Havok 4 has better physics performance, some of them I can see should actually work _better_ - the ones that weren't purely based on hacks, in any case.

I dunno, Des - I think I go into orbit when I take off flying at high altitudes. It just doesn't stop!! It's a slow orbit, I don't see why we wouldn't be able to orbit someone.

Low orbits that are fairly easy to return from still seem to be possible. The orbits that sent you billions of meters away were based on an exploit of Havok1 that has been eliminated in Havok4 - the low orbits do not depend on them.

There are, however, other methods. The good news is, there will probably be a grace period before they percolate down to the grief-kiddies that are 90% of the griefing nuisance in SL.

The serious griefers are another matter. We shall see about those.

And of course, there are always ways to grief. Being orbited is discombobulating, but there are worse things, and probably always will be - unfortunately.

Indeed, orbiting is really mostly a competition between scripters. It doesn't really matter a lot whether one is suddenly a thousand metres high or ten million metres high; either way it is briefly irritating, requiring a teleport or perhaps relog, but then one returns and sits on something.

You can use SLPROXY to edit the Teleport packet and send ppl 2 billion meters up and this does seem to crash the viewer after a few moments, but the person would have to accept your 'teleport' offer in order to do this.

I've also seen scripted object that if you sit on them, will send you far far far away and crash you. but again this is something you have to 'choose' to do, i.e. sit on it.....

im sure someone will make a h4 Blitz/er/orbit/er soon for us to play with :)

It stops the orbits that are caused by the hollowed, dimpled, cut spheres that would go insane. Often called a Blitz I believe.

I have heard this but I have not verified it one way or the other. But I can in about an hour. I'll find someone to orbit me and/or toss me when I log in.

My sister who is new to SL got orbited this morning. Let me just say if it wasn't an official "Orbit" a gnat could starve on the difference. :P

Well. It will be interesting to see how far people can go (figuratively? literally?) with these things.

I guess I'm about as lost as before - though one doesn't really need to send my avatar anywhere to annoy me for annoyance's sake.

Generally a few well-crafted lines of chat will do the job just fine...

Rioko and I just tried toorbit each other with the MystiTool at the hangout just now. Nothing.

I did not try a toss because she is in a mermaid AV and i would hate to have messed up her scripted attachments.

BTW, she looks just as fine as a mermaid as she does in human form ;)

discombobulating...This is my candidate for word of the week :D

What about Self-Worn Deruthers?
04-07-2008 16:50
I have a copy of a self-worn deruther that I use often because kid avatars usually have this bug that stretches us into odball shapes with short arms and legs. (>_<;)

Basically what it did was orbit me to 900M then drop me back down in just about a second or two. Now, in H4, I can fly faster than my deruther. Is there something reversible that can still force me up 900M in a split second that I can attach to myself? (o.o)

I already know about the sittable rocket, but that doesn't help in no-script no-build areas. (>_<;)
