I have a lot of questions about running business in second life, however I'll start with this one. For those of you that run a business that focuses on more than just one item (clothing, attachments, furniture, etc), what do you sell more of?
Reason I ask is because I've been getting better at creating clothing, however my business partner do not have hardly any sales on his clothing items so I don't know if it's worth my time to make too many outfits. I, too, get most of my sales from attachments.
But I don't want to just focus on attachments, I want to learn how to make many items and offer those to the public as well.

I'll put it to you the way a guy put to me....clothing fits in a box...furniture fits in a box....houses fit in a box...which sells for the most?
Sell what sells for the most and make bunches to go in boxes in your store.

I'm not a merchant, I'm a customer, but it's hard for me to imagine that attachments sell better than clothes. People buy lots of different outfits, even some guys. I've scarcely ever bought an attachment, or a building.
I guess you buy what you can't make or don't want to make for yourself. I can't do clothes.

From my own experience, people tend to buy things that are unique or don't have much competition in-world. He might be going up against stores that have better quality, or are cheaper, or advertise a lot more.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
My partner does sell more in prim work (specifically furniture) than clothing items. Same will me, I sell more prim work. I'm just hoping that it's not a waste of time to make clothing if none of it sells.
I have started added attachments with my clothing also.

Do you look at the magazine second style? There are a some greatly skilled people making clothes. This is your competition. IMO, you need to be very, very good or make something unique or find an untapped niche to sell clothes.

Unless you really want to major on one type of thing, I suggest putting them all in the store, and make/add more varieties of the things that sell the best, but not forgetting to add more of the other things too. If a type of item doesn't sell, then take it off display to make room for more of the things that do sell. In other words, suck them all and see.

Cats. I sell lots of cats.
I have a variety of different things in my store - cat avatars, other animal, SF & fantasy avatars, gadgets of several different types. By far the biggest seller is cat avatars. Following that is cat accessories and typing override gadgets, with all my other bits and pieces trailing behind to a varying degree.
I just make stuff coz I think "wouldn't it be fun to make an X?" and let the chips fall where they may. I've been surprised at which things have been popular and which haven't. That's one of the things that makes running my store fun, I find. The element of surprise!

I would second this. One thing I have noticed is that when I make something that I haven't been able to find to buy inworld, that item always sells well. So find a niche, spot a need, and see what happens. /me wanders off to look at Nimbus' cats...

To excel, you must be very good, make unique things, and learn how to market your wares well.

That's exactly what I do. I sell the odd thing or two, but chances are someone will message me saying, "I saw your 'X', can you make me a 'Y'?" I seem to do more custom work than selling premade goods.

maybe the better question would have been what do you buy the most
then you know what to sell (at least to the forum crowd)
as for what do I sell the most, hard to say
I make clothes, some shoes, some prefabs, dabble basically in this and that clothes are what I make the most and seems to be what I sell the most (makes sense) oh and I have made skins too
right now I am working on a complete kid avatar, with as much as I can make without having to put too much on a notecard (I want to sell the avatar not a notecard to tell you how to get the avatar LOL)
which means at this point, hair... and an ao, will be what they will have to go buy
had her at the cartel last night hehe
(of course going to do more than just one, she is my start)

Sell what sells for the most and make bunches to go in boxes in your store.
~Lana Tomba When I opened my store, I had some clothes I spent a lot of time making. Really proud of them. But I needed to bulk up the stock so the store did not look so bare. So I put up a few odds and ends. Leathr jackets, tee shirts and the like. One of the very first things I made were a pair of brown leather low-ride pants with lacing up the side seams. Gowns and full outfits were priced at 250 to 350. Boots from 180 (simple) to 600 for thigh boots with chains and studs. My one-off things were L$25. I sold more low end items than top end; which is what I sort of expected. What I did not expect was how much more. My largest money making item were the brown leather pants. So, never understimate low end items in mass quantities.

Business Tips

I think you should specialize in one type of product, and become really good at it. There are far too many shops with inferior items in SL, and it's just a TP away to go somewhere else where better stuff is for sale. Pick the type you do best and go deep. Also, you might want to read some tips for running an SL business on my blog at: http://www.secondeffects.com/2007/11/top-ten-tips-for-starting-second-life.html

Thank you all for your replies.
They are all very helpful to know. I will look at the above poster's blog too. I just get into different moods. Some days I feel like making clothing items, other days I have a prim itch lol.
Obviously, I sell more prim work than clothing... but I'm hoping the more I learn to work with PS3 the better I'll become at clothing and texture work.

I think the most important thing is...
have fun doing whatever you do it is nice to be able to sell it and even nicer when (if) it covers your tier costs and such
but if you create just to sell and nothing sells where is your motivation
I have a lot of stuff for sale in my store and I do not consider it inferiour, sure it is not as good as the top of the line, but it is not trash either
if I were basing it on it has to sell, I would have stopped a long time ago
I am having a blast doing the kid stuff I just started, and learning stuff quite by accident in photoshop LOL
which I am not complaining about!!
heh
