Ok, so I have a question.

Is there a way to get a radio or other media player which doesn't use a stream? sort of like a CD with a set of tracks which are played within a certain area but that doesn't have to be played through the stream on the parcel?

Thanks :)

I don't think there is, unless you want to chop the songs up into 10 second clips, up load them, then splice them back together.

I think (not sure) you need to host your files on a server and then change your land media URL to point to them.

Hope someone else jumps in... someone who actually knows, lol

hmm :( ok thanks Isabeau. I had a feeling that was the case, just wanted to make sure.
I guess I'll have to leave it.
Thanks again

Right. And this kinda works: even the best in-world CD scripts "skip" sometimes, just because it takes a while to pre-load the next sound clip, and maintaining at least one next-clip in nearby viewers' caches is an inexact science, especially under download lag conditions. But it's done; in-world musical instruments are all based on the same mechanism, sometimes with a few bells and whistles (so to speak :o ).

I am working on a idea for such a device. I have to put something together and make it work in RL. Once I do that. (If my idea works) It will be easy to do in SL.

The device may only be able to play one item at a time, but I would like it to be a menu driven device that would play a list or selection of tunes. (un-chopped of course)

I haven't messed around with it yet, to much other tech stuff to figure out right now, but Winamp has a feature that allows you to stream your playlist from your computer to other computers. I'd think that this could allow you to do the same to SL.

That sounds like a good idea CX. Let me know if you manage it ;) I will be first in line lol.

Basically, my problem is that I am on a shared parcel. The music stream that is on there at the minute is great and I do like it and don't want to lose it, it's just not always what I want. I wouldn't mind a softer kind of music occasionally or even some of my heavier stuff. The current stream is dance music.
I have never even thought of changing streams and have no clue how to and i don't want to inconvenience my neighbours. Plus i want to keep the current stream lol. It would just be nice to have some different music occasionally, but just around my home, not on the whole parcel.

I thought it probably wasn't possible. I just wanted to check. I really don't want to start messing around with hacking songs to peices and scripting etc. I have never done a single script line in my life lol.

Plus I want to have a party soon lol.

I guess I will just have to chat with my neighbours and see if they mind me changing the stream when they're not home occasionally, they are rarely home at the same time as me anyway I'm sure I can figure out how to do that. I have notecard destructions in here somewhere...

Thanks for your help everyone :)

There are 'cheap' radios that let you pre-program shoutcast stations, so you can change them. I'm not sure which ones are the best to use. I got a cheap one the other day and pasted the script to a better looking more expensive higher prim 'scriptless' one.

I've set up several "Radios" and "Multimedia systems" recently for clients.

As others stated, streaming audio and streaming video is one stream of each allower per parcel. So you can have one radio station on and one video station on, and can listen to or watch one of those at a time, based on your client selection. If there are two radios on the same parcel, it's like a TV set with two remotes - you can both change the channel, changing what the other hears (or sees, for video streams).

The most simple solution would be for you and your parcel neighbors to each set up identical 'radios' that you program to the same selection of stations. Then, as a matter of courtesy, agree not to change the station unless there is no one else on the parcel, without asking the other person first via IM if a change of music is OK.

There are a number of options out there. I rather like the equipment at JZ Corporation, Diones Designs (100, 153, 24).

Yeah, but it's important to note that each listener would require a separate upload stream from your computer--it doesn't get multiplexed at the sim or anything. That's why folks use stream servers: to have the bandwidth for multiple listeners. If one has huge upstream bandwidth and not too many listeners, it could work directly from one's own machine; otherwise not.

One note about the *video* media stream. I haven't played with this, but I'm given to understand from some earlier posts that it's possible to send separate video streams to individual avatars on the same parcel. Indeed, a relevant LSL function takes an agent UUID argument, so perhaps it's really simple, but again, I haven't played with this. It's just my understanding that there are products/services that use this. (Possibly "Silver Stream" or something like that?)

Claire, we use The Internet Radio on our rented parcel and LOVE it. It doesn't affect others in the sim (but not sure if you're talking somehow sharing the same "parcel".)

The Internet Radio allows us to search by song title, artist, music genre, key words and set up presets very easily.

CX, if you develop a way to somehow import individual songs into SL, I'm next in line right behind Claire. :D

Yes, i mean the same parcel. I am in a skybox and don't want to mess up the stream of someone who lives below me.

If it's for personal listening only, Claire, my simple solution is to have Winamp running in the background and just use that to play music off my own hard drive or from one of the vast range of Shoutcast radio stations.
It doesn't cut out the local background sounds received withinsl and it doesn't oblige others to suffer my questionable taste in music.

I have done this with winamp using using shoutcast installed on my PC, but on a good cable internet connection you can't get more than about 4 or 5 listeners before you run out of bandwidth. The shoutcast server installed on your PC with the DNAS installed in winamp will multiplex to the sim just fine - as long as it is only you and a couple of friends listening.
