Get a better video card and more RAM. I recently upgraded my vid card from nVidia 6200LE to nVidia geforce 8600GT.........boosted my FPS from 5 or 6 to over 25 (with some spurts to 45). It made the video smoother (though, even at 5 FPS on my old card, the movement wasn't really all that bad). But the thing I noticed more than FPS being higher was the detail and vivid color increase!

1 gig ram minium. I run with 2 gig myself.

Vid Card isn't so much a factor as how much vid ram you have. Anything less than 512mb vid ram starts to lower everything.

If you're runing 128mb or lower of vid ram...ummm...no way to boost.

SL is a memory hog. Plain and simple. The Client Viewer doesn't use much processing power, you just need the ram and bandwidth to cram all the data over the net.

56k modems...ummm....yeah. DSL at 3mb or Cable. Routers are beyond me, but I know they need tweaking a bit from talking to freinds of mine that use them.

And play with your Prefernces. The Avatar Vertex Program setting sometimes works best on one setup, but not another. Try changing things here and there and observe the results.

On my admittedly-underpowered computer, running SL jacks the processor cycles all the way to 100%. At least in my case, the lack of processor power has been a major impediment. (Estimated time to buying a glorious new SLectacular computer: 1 month! :D )

In answer to 3Ring's question... I also get 3-8 fps in normal situations. Obviously upgrading your computer is the real answer. In the meantime, you can take advantage of certain things when appropriate. Turning down various types of graphics detail when you don't need it helps: hide particles, set terrain detail to low, turn your draw distance all the way down, set tree and flexi detail to the minimum, turn off ripple water, stuff like that.

But by far the best for me has been to go to a skybox or platform at an elevation where other builds are not visible. On my 500m platform or my alt's 700m house, with draw distance turned all the way down, I can't see anything that isn't mine. At times like these, I can actually get 20-30 fps! Of course anything you add to your environment, including other avs, takes that down, but it will generally still be better than at ground level where your computer has to render everything around you.

If you are running an AMD dual core then they have an update now that has helped me considerably. With it, setting task manager to run SL on both cores and then checking the box in the Client menu, I have doubled my fps.

AMD Dual Core Optimizer:

Not sure what you're running on, Ava, but I only have a AMD Sempron 3200. With that, SL uses about 15% of the processor, peaking at 45-50%. I call my CPU mid-level (I'm not running a dual-core), so I figured that was low.

Granted a lower end CPU would tax more, but then, if you're running that low a PC, you're not going to be able to cram 2 gig of ram into it anyway ^.~

And grats on the comming new puter! My ETA to a new PC is about forever, going on the day after. lol

My average is about 3fps. What can I do to boost mine to 5.5 or so?

My graphics card is hardly cutting edge, but nor is it obsolete (128mb ATI X200) and works admirably with many other (better looking!) 3D games.

I'm not sure which box in the client menu Jesse is talking about but if you are running Windows XP I know how to set your CPU affinity.

ALT/CTRL/DEL to bring up your task manager while running SL. Click the performance tab and see if both cores are being used (they most likely will be). Then go back to applications and right click on Second Life, Click on affinity. Then just check which processor you want SL to run on.....either is fine. Go back to the performance tab and see if you have helped out your processor. My dual core P4 didn't really change much by doing that...........it's roughly 50% with one or both cores running SL.

Hope that helped.

In SL, type ctrl alt d to bring up the debug menus. Click Client and go down to Rendering and click on "Run Multiple Threads" to enable it.

In the previous post it said how to set the affinity using windows Task Manager. Instead of selecting either processor, you want to select BOTH processors.

Hopefully it will help. I am sure you know by now that the Nvidia 6100 is kinda lacking for SL. It will run it and many people use it here but the 6600 is the minimum that LL suggests. I was running SL using the built in to motherboard video card and it does work but I finally broke down and got a 7900 and will never look back. (Actually I bought an 8800!!!! I had to bring it back to the computer store in tears. It wouldn't fit on my motherboard :( ). 7900 is a great and now affordable card thou. Good Luck!

PS setting affinity in windows and enabling multiple threads in SL will do nothing thou untill you install the dual core Optimizer.

ctrl - shift - 1 .. reports 14.2 - 17.2 FPS
ctrl - alt - del .. CPU between 93% - 100%
