Hi. I bought one of those 50$ P5 Virtual Reality gloves and haven't found much stuff to use it on (much to my irritation). I wanted to find out if there were any patches for SL that allowed using virtual gloves more interactively. Any help would be most appreciated.
thank you, Eiji Mayo

I haven't seen these gloves, but if the software that comes with it allows for mapping to keyboard controls, then you can do anything you want in SL as far as controls, just have to set it up right. I haven't heard of any patches for ANY controllers at all, sorry.

It's unfortunate that you paid full price for your glove, P5's are easily found at a steep discount because they never really took off. Why didn't they take off? Because the tracking is terrible. A couple years ago I bought one to experiment with using in my interactive art, and I consider the $20 I paid worth it to know for sure that the thing is a worthless piece of crap.

On a related note, earlier today I was wondering if there's a way to get a dancepad to control avatar movement. Nothing fancy, just walking forward and backward and pivoting would be sufficient.

There are PC versions of "Dance Dance Revolution" with a PC version of the dance pad, and since all the pads are doing is replacing keys for movement, it should work. HEH! Didnt know that.

I always wanted to try one of those P5 gloves, but never got around to it, mostly because I had heard what Johan said about them, that the tracking was just awful.
Still, they always looked cool, like a nintendo glove or whatnot, lol. But then again, those sucked too.

Broken, how does the glove work in windows? I work for a company that makes VR gloves, and our devices basically just appear as windows/directx input devices. If this is how the P5 behaves as well it will appear in Start->Settings->Control Panel->Game controllers) then you can look on the web for freeware apps that let you map joystick axes and buttons to mouse movement and keypresses. You should be able to do just about anything with it then

Though if the OP can get theirs working right, and smoothly, I may look into getting one. I always liked the idea of having the control at my fingertips, literally.

Broken, what I said about the $20 being worth it to me to be certain it's junk applies to your case too it sounds like. I was like you: I'd heard the thing sucked, but I was still curious about it so I had to see for myself. Trust me though, it is really really crappy.
flint, who do you work for? I am always on the lookout for new vendors of VR equipment.

That's a shame, really. It would be pretty cool if they'd get something like that to work. Ahh well.. Maybe by the time SL is working properly we'll have world peace too

my favorite mapping software is auto hotkey, its supposed to be a hot key script maker but you can also make pretty extensive ways like simulating key presses, reading various direct x inputs and with all the flexibility of a programming language.
I used it to make myself a joystick key emulator for my x52 when some keys wouldn't be recognized by a game.

if anyone is still interested in software for dealing with input devices and such, one that I've been using for quite a bit (which has several glitches here and there like SL, but liek SL, pleases me enough to compensate) is GlovePIE , originallly made specific for VR gloves it now can handle several different type of devices, like head tracking systems, joysticks, mouses, video-game controlers like the Wiimote and the Sixaxis, and is capable of emulating the output of several types of devices aswell
