Okay so I got this new apartment ina high rise building. I am putting out a few peices of furniture when i start to read something. I thought I was alone but in fact I could "hear" through the walls, floor, seiling. Well my neighbors were getting a little frisky. So to give them some privacey I did a little needed shopping. They were stillat it when I came back... Should I have *coughed* or something to let them know I was there?

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

And then be prepared to have to mute them for a bit, because some people simply don't get even the least polite hints

Why don't the makers of those sex things make the objects work on obscure channels? I know you can script some objects to communicate with each other where the avatar can see it, but those on channel 0 without any kind of special gadget on can't. Tell me these things don't spam on channel 0...

Get some frineds to come over and have a lively chat, when they're there of course. If they know they can hear you, they may figure you can hear them and go to IM.
The more direct approach would be to just let them know you can hear them. If they don't mind and you do, you can mute them as suggested above.

Tell me these things don't spam on channel 0... I'd guess that the problem in this case was actual avatar chat rather than scripted object chat. I think most notti bits do use channel 0, but can be set to whisper on it (so radius is 10m instead of 20), but you're quite right: they could just as well use llInstantMessage and/or llOwnerSay when talking to the participants. I'd also guess that the participants in this case were fully aware that they had an audience. Otherwise, why rent in a high-rise apartment?

Someone needs to create a broom with a beat on the ceiling animation.

Morgaine and I were in a ballroom a while back where a nearby couple were getting 'amorous'. We were IM-in each other trying to ignore them but it got hotter and hotter until I said in open chat 'Isn't it a pain using IM Morgaine just cos someone's within chat distance?' There followed another line .. then silence and Chris, yes! a broom tapping the ceiling with a little dust falling?

I had the same problem with some neighbors in my last apartment. They talked in IM, but their Excite was not. I ended up leaving that apartment and getting a house. No noisy neighbors, now.

Maybe they'd like it...

Maybe they did know that I could hear. I like the hihg rise cause of the cheap rent and location to stuff, i am not appalled about hearing the romantic interlude. I was a little disturbed at the end when the guy appeared to make a swift exit as soon as they were done. I am not easily judging adn I wasnt chatting with others that the other chat got in the way. Just kinda thought they thought they were alone. I didn't want to ruin the moment next time i will take the advice of inviting a few friends over for a lively chat.

Ask for fix from apartment owner

Since you can have buildings at any height, why isn't each apartment at a very different height to get out of hearing range of each other? Seems like the easiest answer. Make each one a skybox with TP's to get there (if desired) in the lobby.

I had some neighbors like that once. I think they were oblivious to the fact that they could be heard. There is a fairly commonplace gesture in Secondlife which uses the sound clip from "When Harry Met Sally" where Sally is showing Harry how convincingly she can fake an orgasm and is screaming "YES! YES! YES!" I simply played that a few times and the chat went dead silent.
