Any way to IM into SL from the outside...

The motherboard on my good PC just died. My other PC won't run SL.

But I'd still like to chat with my friends.

Is there anyway to IM into SL from outside the main client using some other program?

Thanks in advance regardless of the answer.

Hi Georgie and welcome to the forum :)

First thing I can think of is www.zonkster.com ....... but you have to sign up inworld, so probably not an option. :(

There are lightweight clients around that you might be able to use though, such as SLeek Ajaxlife.

Good luck :)

If your account settings already send your offline IM's to your email, you can receive and respond to IMs that way, but someone would have to IM you first since you can't initialize an IM that way. Almost every method requires you to log into SL to get set-up to send IM's.

Actually you don't need to sign up inworld to use zonkster.

But it is recommended so that any messages you send are authenticated.

Search on SLExchange for IM to email programs, there are several for sale. I haven't had any problems with the one I'm using. Only drag is that they can't just "respond" to your initial message, they have to look up your profile and IM you. But after that first contact at the start of each session, you can im to email back and forth to your heart's content.

I've recently signed up for zonkster.com. It looks good, but I have had much of a chance to play with it yet.

Sleek is more than just chat...for example, your friends can offer you teletype, and you go there. You can both IM and CHAT. You can follow other avatars as they move around. You can use Search and interact with objects.

I make the analogy of being blind. SLeek is SL with your eyes closed. Tricky, but still quiet enjoyable...now, if it just ran on my iPhone...

I have never been successful in sending a message through Zonkster to someone who wasn't authenticated...or is it going through anyway and giving me the warning?

I love SLeek... allows me to do business transactions from school/work ^_^

I can appear to be there, pay them, they can pay me, I can sit down (If I know what I'm doing), follow them... and sometimes I do it well enough they've no idea I can't see lol

Hi HoneyBear,

Please don't confuse your personal zonkster code with your SL avatar key. zonkster uses a name2key database to look up your key so that messages can be sent. If the recipient is a fairly new resident or has not logged on a lot to SL the chances are his or her key is not in the name2key database.

sorry, couldn't find key.

what does this mean?
the resident you are trying to reach is not in the name2key database we use. so that you can reach this person in future she or he will need to teleport to Chuginadak 229, 247, 34 and touch one of our communicators.

I have been to Chuginadak and touched your communicator, so I am logged into your system. The name I chose to IM just now has not. That was the message I received.

Yes, that is the response you get if you try and send a message to someone whose key is not in the name2key database we're using.

I’m a Sleek fan also. Works great! Some other things you can do with Sleek besides IM and Chat are access your inventory, view textures and photos, search and view profiles, read and edit Notecards. You can also view your friends list to see who’s online and even control the can see online status, see me on map and modify my objects options

Not nearly as noticeable as running Second Life…LOL
You would need to be able to download and extract the zip file is all. There is no program that gets installed really, just a folder with a few files and the executable. But I’m in IT so… :p
