Channel 4 News reporter "If somebody buys a piece of land in Second Life, Do they own that piece of land?"

Philip Rosedale "Absolutely. They own it. Probably the most significant aspect of ownership is their ability to resell it."

Actually this is a half decent news clip on the platform. Not sure the LL legal team will agree!

We have to clintonize "own" for it to make sense.

We don't even "own" our account information, not to mention our land.

You can "own" a home/land in RL too - just try not paying property taxes though and see how long you still "own" it. ;)

Interesting analogy considering what a lot of residents feel Linden is doing to them.

The problem is the word "someone".

Your avatar can buy land and sell land. (in world or via a web page.)

You control that avatar, but it is comprised of bits and bytes that are owned by LL.

So... can "we" own land in SecondLife? That depends:

YES: if "we" are the avatars/residents inside a digital service and

NO: if "we" are the human beings on the outside subscribing to that digital service. ;)

No, because "land" is "real estate", which definition does not include anything residing on a computer server. What we "own" is a bundle of "rights" granted to us relating to a certain set of zeroes and ones for as long as we abide by LL's rules, and pay our tier. It's not anything akin to land ownership in RL.
