I don't think you can get on without downloading it first. How is this possible? For downloading it just add /download after sl.com

There is ajaxlife.net which will let you do a few things like chat, IM, inventory etc. It's not a full fledged client though.

Edit to add: There are also lightweight text only clients like SLeek, but you do need to download those and run them on your PC. http://delta.slinked.net/second-life/sleek/ if you want that one.

It just keeps giving me that "Region has begun the logout process" message - but I can immediately log in with ajaxlife, sleek, or any of the various releases of the LL viewer.

Oh well, I have noted the website as something to continue trying to see what it is like.

Anyone on a Mac using those? I got in with ajax, but couldn't do anything. Movable took 20 minutes to log me in, and still had no balance, friends or inventory. Maybe they're only for PCs?

Both of those sites do work under OS X. They rely on Javascript, and Safari's Javascript can be a little bit of a hog, so expect a lot of beachballs if you try to use either with an older Mac (G4 or early G5). Firefox or Camino might work better on those machines.

Both sites can take a few tries to get a login to work sometimes, ajaxlife seems to succeed more often. Ajaxlife has more features that work so far, movablelife.net is prettier but not everything on the page seems to have been implemented yet.
