Programs for texture making

I have GIMP right now but I can't figure out how to use it other than select and crop and text and other small things.

I had paint shop pro on my old computer but lost the disk and I don't believe I can afford photoshop.

Which is better? Should I stick with GIMP and if so where can I find good tutorials? Or should I buy the newest paint shop pro since I'm familiar witht that?

This is an interesting question for me. I've been using PSP for a long time and now I know how to do a lot of what I want to do with it. I have The Gimp though and every so often I come across a tutorial on how to do something cool with it. Other that that I really can't seem to figure out on my own how to do much the Gimp.

Cristalle is right. If you check the texture forum you'll find quite a few posts about the GIMP. I believe that someone has a tutorial he did for the GIMP, too, that might help you. Good luck!

I've used GIMP for around 18 months and, whilst it was hard to get used to at first, I love it now. Also, I've found that most PS tutorials are now also converted for GIMP users. I addition, there are great brushes and such like now out there that people have converted. So, I'd say stick with GIMP and go create! (If it was easy, everyone would do it).

You could also try Texture Maker or Genetica. They aren't direct art programs like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro but they are designed for making seamless textures easily.

Also consider Photoshop Elements. It's much less expensive than Photoshop, yet many of the tutorials and plugins available for Photoshop will work in Elements.

I've got Photoshop Elements on the Mac..pretty good..but recently someone (here on the forum) suggested Paintshop Pro (which is about the same price). I definately wouldn't shell out on the full Photoshop prog (expensiv-biggo!!). I'm about to commit to the Paintshop Pro download prog for my PC.
