Hey Everyone,

I was just wondering how you can make it so Objects are linked.
Cause I tried Locking the objects together, but it didn't work.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Frazo,

Right-click on one of the objects, then with edit menu open, hold down shift key, click on all the objects you want to link, then open tools menu at the top of the screen and choose link. Note: the last item you click will be the main prim in the linkset.

Hope this helps.

:)

Right click on one of the objects/prims you want to link - but not the prim you want as your base prim - then while holding your shift key down, click on all the prims you want to link, leaving your chosen base prim until last. That done, go to Tools on your menu bar and choose link.

If the prims are more than 32m apart you may need to link your build in sections. You can then lock these sections together when you have your build in place (helps if you don't want to accidentally delete part of your build, which I did repeatedly until I found lock).

EDIT: dang Sally, slow down:)

Sally has it right :). I tend to use the keyboard shortcuts too:

To link: CTRL L
To unlink: SHIFT CTRL L

last object selected is always the root prim of the linkset.

Be aware, there is still an old bug in linking objects together (AFAIK). If you get a message saying "Link Failed: Objects too far apart" then you've run into the bug. It's highly annoying and happens even if the objects are touching each other. Just a heads-up.

Hope this helps :)

Just another warning about linking. If you then unlink your linked objects - EVERYTHING will unlink. consider for instance a chair made with 10 prims...all those pieces will now be separate and you have to select each piece again to relink.

The first time this happened to me it was a large group of candles. I kept finding "flames" floating in mid air for days.

Just a refinement: An object will completely unlink if you have the entire thing selected when you hit "unlink". However, if you "edit linked parts" and choose only one part, you can safely unlink just that piece, work on it, and relink it with the whole.

It isn't possible to link objects if they're too far apart. Not a bug as I understand it, just a restriction of the system. A bug is that sometimes it says they're too far apart when they're not...and that's just darn annoying :)

If you have this issue then you have a few options:

1. You can link together the pieces you can. To create, for example, 3 objects that when put next to each other make up the whole object.

2. You can highlight all the prims and 'take' them into your inventory at the same time. This creates a combined object and when you rez it from your inventory it will contain all the prims but they WON'T be linked together. So make sure you have the edit window open before you rez it, otherwise you'll need to select all the prims by hand again to move them/take them/etc. as a whole object.

3. You can combine options 1 and 2 above. i.e. Link what you can and pick the linked objects up at once to create a combined object.

4. You can use a tool like Builder's Buddy which allows you to link together big builds. You can find Builder's Buddy in the script wiki for free.

To unlink just a single prim from a big object. Click 'edit linked parts' in the Edit window and select the prim you want to unlink. Then go to Tools - Unlink. Then just that prim will be unlinked from the whole.

Just one more tip... from natalias blog lol ;)

As people have said before, when you link objects, the last prim you touch will be the base prim. If you have managed to select all of your prims and can't remember if you clicked the right prims last, you can hold shift and click to unselect and do shift and click again. You can then link the prims. This just doubly makes sure you have the correct base prim - which should be blue.
I know the blue kind of makes it obvious but I have made items which have been so busy that I couldn't tell which was blue anyway. Just think this way is easier. ;)

Thankyou Claire.
I'll be sure to remember these tips.
I'll probably end up writing them all down :)

this is really helpful,
allthoug does anyone know if the method with 'select everything and take it' works for a LOT of prims? like 900ish?

i have the problem that i have to move my whole house which has about 900 prims without having to take everything apart.

anything helps :)
