I just got a notice that I'm paying VAT on my land tier and I live in Canada. We have no VAT.

I think its a ploy to make us forget about our disappearing inventory problems.

Since when does a US organization have to pay VAT???

You have a very sophisticated VAT system in Canada. Certainly better than we have in Europe.

We have VAT in Canada but we call it GST. Fortunately we're not part of the EU so with any luck it'll be a few more months before we have to worry about sales tax with LL. So long as they don't register in Canada we should be ok.

I'm self employed and have a tax license so I'm hopefully prepared, in the event that it does happen.

They are doing it based partly on where you SAID you were from when you signed up (so they said) and partly from what your IP address is. It seems llike if the IP doesn't match what you said about your location they may take the IP addresses word for it

IP address to country corrollation VERY problematic, you will have to file a ticket to get them to remove you from VAT or they will charge it to you weather you owe it or not.
