ZOMG!

I've been waiting since Nov 17 for my cheque from LL to arrive.

Today is Dec 12, and my cheque finally came in the mail!

But along with my cheque, I got the following letter:

From: someone

Dear LindeX Check Recipient:

Thank you for your continued successful participation in the Second Life economy. We thank you for your significant contribution to the community.

As you know, we currently offer two methods for processing your credits from selling Linden Dollars: via PayPal or a check request. Check requests take longer to process, and are a burden on both Linden Lab and our residents.

To continue to offer you the most efficient service possible, as of December 31st we will cease the processing of credits via check. Beginning January 1, 2009, PayPal will be the only method for processing LindeX credits for amounts under US$10,000. We will have a system to process credits via bank for amounts over US$10,000 for qualified Residents. If you would like to apply to recieve wire transfers, please visit www.secondlife.com/wireapplication.

We wanted to give you personal notice and ample time to establish a PayPal account, as well as offer you the assistance required to make this transition. A special ticketing queue will be set up in the support portal for you to ask questions or get help, and as always, you may phone our billing help line at any time.

Please be sure to sign up for a Paypal account or complete the bank-wire qualification process before January 1st, 2009. After that time we will no longer be able to honor check requests.

Sincerely,

John Zdanowski (Zee Linden)
CFO, Linden Lab

Wow, I'm amazed there has not been an announcement about it on the blog.

lol you think people who want cheques are going to be happy about this?? I think not somehow...

this is nicely brushed under the carpet and if anyone whines then ll can always point them here and blame them for not keeping up with things.

Phil Deakins posted about this a few weeks ago and IIRC he had a reply from Zee Linden about it and why, but i can't locate the post so fingers crossed and he may post it here :)

The funny thing is, that I signed up for a PayPal account just this morning BEFORE I got the letter cuz I was really getting tired of waiting and was also worried that the check got lost in the mail or something. I did live support with concierge and they couldn't even tell me when the check was sent out.

So, I was planning on using the PayPal option anyway, so I'm fine with this, but I too was surprised that there was no news about it here, so I made the post.

This was a much better option for me anyway since I've already had to wait so long to get the check, and now my bank put a 15 business day hold on it too. I won't see my money till Jan 8th they said. :(((

If I would have used the PayPal option in the first place, I'd be having a bit better Christmas thats for sure. But I guess thats what credit cards are for!

Cheers everyone!

Now they just need to explain why it sometimes takes a week or more to deposit it to Paypal, when XStreet SL is able to do it in about 30 seconds.

It stinks for people doing transactions over US$1,000 (or whatever the paypal cap is right now) and under US$10,000 but I can see why LL made the change since it must cost them a lot more to deal with check transactions than with paypal which I'm guessing they at least semi-automate.

Wow, I'm amazed there has not been an announcement about it on the blog.

But that would both a) make sense and b) involve communication.

Not holding my breath.

That url to request a wire transfer application redirects to a pretty pathetic looking application that doesn't even look like it is associated with LL. I surely hope that page is in-work or someone is seriously on crack if they think anyone with common sense would enter personal financial info there.

What about those who don't use Paypal and are not transferring over 10k usd?

Who cashes out 10k + at one shot? According to the economy statistics 181 users in Nov had a positive monthly inflow of >5000usd. And out of those 181 you have to qualify for it.

Shady. Downright shady. Seems like a ploy to hold on to $ as long as they can.

Every credit card processor I ever done business with does ACH transfers along side of credit card transactions for a nominal monthly fee and the time frame for transaction completion is 1-5 business days.

Lets add bank transfers as an option. ESPECIALLY if checks are no longer going to be an option.

Hear hear, I agree. Although I have yet to experience the 30 seconds. But I have never waited longer than 1 business day. Almost always I deposit it Monday in the AM, and by dinner time it's ready to bump from Paypal into my bank. Totally agree, why does it take LL a week, when it takes SLX just a day at the most? I don't get it either.

Although I have yet to cash out 100,000 grand, that's a bit crazy, I mean are you buying a real house here?

Not really since you can send it out via paypal with as little as 10 USD.

Wire transfer is an option as stated in several places on this thread, on the account pages and on the knowledge base, you just have to have be sending a minimum balance to use it since I'm guessing if it's not over a certain amount it doesn't justify the cost for LL.

If you mean like direct deposit as like employers do I doubt they could do it because of the different locations and banking issues with all the users in various parts of the world. That and it isn't a standard payment that can be scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly like a paycheck.

What about the people who don't use paypal? Google paypal sucks and you can see some of their dirty laundry.

Wire transfer for 10,000usd or more. Cost has no bearing as they pass those fees onto the user as stated in the KB.

Employeer/Employee direct deposit is not the same as using the ACH system. Electronic funds transfers (ACH) have been around for years and are cheaper than hard checks, paypal, and credit card processing.

We had a thread about this a few weeks ago and PayPal isn't a good option because of the fees, unless only small amounts of money are being taken out.

At one time Zee Linden did seem to be exploring a more versatile method of moving money around. What became of the idea I have no idea. :)

3. Would you like the option to hold or move your balances to a Second Life Branded Mastercard or Visa debit card? The card would enable you to receive your payouts faster and enable you to move the money to your regular bank from the debit card.

I think it was that coupled with the new money moving laws as well IIRC

I've used Paypal from the beginning because I can set limits on my Paypal account so my spending doesn't go over a certain amount monthly and Paypal sends a warning if the spending is over my allotted limit. I have also alerted Paypal via phone to call me if the spending limit gets changed. My rl bf and I set it up this way for security purposes. A draw back is Paypal has a fee. But, it's my preferred payment method.
