Firstnames?

Hello,
I'm Ras Nootan.
I've been noticing people who are using only their firstnames, in-game. You can't see their lastnames unless they type something, or if you check their profile out.
I was just wondering if anyone knows how to do this, because I would like to be able to use only my firstname and because nobody has been wanting to tell me how to do it.
Also, is it okay to do it? Or would you get banned..?

Check their group title. It's a trick that fools the viewer, there are ways to use it maliciously, you'd need an unofficial viewer or a tool to set the group title, and though I've seen people wearing such a tag standing around conversing with Linden employees, it's not worth it and you could possibly get in trouble. Also it's overdue for a fix

Linden Labs could probably make a little money charging for single-name avatars.

It shouldn't be hard to implement -- all they'd have to do is allow for a blank (or null) last name.

There was a well known land baroness (or land bottess) who had just a single name. The name appeared as a single word above here avatar, on her profile or on land details of the 16m plots that she dealt in. I never understood how that was done.

Yes, for the younger people here that works. For the older ones we know who they are.

I think that LL could not really allow single named avs now without serious breakage of scripted systems throughout the grid.

What they could do however is give options for how you want your name to appear above your avs head, allowing you to show only firstname, lastname or even a nick name etc. and yet when you touched something or were detected via sensor your full name would be sent instead and converting your unique key would yield your full name.
There could even be way to return the chosen displayed name via script (possibly via llGetObjectDetails()).

Of course this would only be a good idea if it worked for everyone seeing your av rather that just your viewer which is the way the current options for showing your name/group tag works.
