I fear this is the dumbest question, but I've killed about an hour looking for the answer. Is there a way to log out without quitting the SL client?

nope, you have to quit, then restart it , annoying if wanting to log into an alt

unplug your modem/disable your wifi.
On my laptop, there's a switch that does it. Guess its now to be known as the "log out without quitting killswitch"
