I've done searches on here and SL support, even googled about learning to DJ t no luck.

Can anyone recommend a site or someone to talk to in SL as to where I can leanr the process of what I would need to DJ?

I don't have a DJ job yet but am looking to learn what's all involved.

Thanks.

What you will need in order to DJ in SecondLife...

1. Collection of MP3s to play (Careful of Copyright Infringement here)
2. Headset with Microphone (Headset so your listeners do not hear the music coming from your speakers when you are takling... Microphone.. well obvious here)
3. Broadcasting Software (Winamp with the Shoutcast DSP Plugin can be used.. but most clubs want you to use SAM Broadcaster..much better quality and control)
This is the software that allows you to stream the music to a Relay Server.. which brings me to..
4. Shoutcast Relay Server.. Search the web for Shoutcast hosting and you will find tons. You can also actually rent these from SecondLife providers... Search In-World
These are rented by sound quality and number of listeners.. 50 listeners is all you need unless you are going to be working at a very crowded venue.
5. A Parcel where you have Media rights so you can practice.

Here's the basic gist of how Streaming Music into SecondLife works:
The URL of the website hosting (in the form of IP address and port number... http://123.25.55.44:8000) the music you want to play is placed in the Media Settings in About Land for that land parcel. The music (and movies, TV) does not stream through SecondLife at all. The Media settings for the parcel tells the Client computer where to connect in order to stream directly from the web server.

Here is some basic information concerning Streaming Music in SL in the Wiki:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Streaming_Music

There is nothing easy, simple or quick about learning to become a DJ in SecondLife. It takes time and energy and money. There will be new software to learn... music to collect... and money for the ShoutCast Relay Server. After you have learned the process.. then there is finding a club owner/manager willing to hire someone new. Don't get me wrong, they are out there, but those are usually the clubs just starting out. Also... the majority of DJ jobs in SecondLife are Tips Only.

So.. if you really want to do this... Do it for the love of the crowd and the Music. That's why I've been doing it for 1 and 1/2 years.. it was never to make money.

I hope this helps

Lias Leandros runs the DJ School in SL. The class isn't cheap, but it's good.

It's called Club School and you can find it on the Bear sim.

That is a great explanation, of the technical aspects and basics of dj'ing in sL.. but you also will need to capture the art of it as well. For this one, it started out 15 years ago making mixtapes for girlfriends, then 5 years of playing in clubs and dive bars.. having an extensive collection is key if you play regular gigs, so you don't play the same tracks every show. Also being able to cater to requests depending on what genre(s) you are getting into.. And if you're dj'ing electronic music, there's a whole other paycheck worth of software you need and a lot of practice actually beatmatching and mixing. Then another class on being a good emcee. :)

I've heard of that club school, do they have a booth at sl5b? I thought I saw them in some photos

I just stepped in and did it, I think classes for something like DJing is a waste of lindens (of course if the class if free then not a waste)

DJing is an art, the technical side is easy to overcome

Yup, we have a parcel on Dwell Island opening today. For the first week of the Birthday party we have 7 DJs in different countries playing different genres of music side-by-side. For week 2 (Monday June 30th to Sunday July 6th) we are teaching our DJ class FREE OF CHARGE in 5 languages at the exhibit space. Check event listings and the SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS thread at the end of this week for the free training schedule.

When I get into SL I will send you the information you need to get started. We also do job placement and on-going support once your a member of the CLUB SCHOOL group.

Lias,

Would the class be of benefit to someone who's having eh....slight problems.....streaming as a live performer?? I'm having dreadful problems regarding sound/distortion etc, would your class cover topics like this?
