Does anyone know where I can get a good comprehensive guide to forming and managing a SL group..sort of 'Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About SL Groups'

I've done a search in the Knowledge Base but all I get are answers to individual questions..which would be fine if I had an individual question to ask..but I need to know 'everything'

Thanks..Perre..:)

Do you mean the technical or the social side of managing a group?

As long as your group doesn't have any land deeded to it, there's little harm in just experimenting with groups.

The knowledge base has a good set of FAQ's on groups. It should answer most of your questions.

I find that the group configuration interface, though large, is one of the easiest to understand a follow. There's one gotcha - remember to use refresh if you're looking for current information. There are only a few concepts: the distinction between being owned by a group and set by a group, group tier, the way money interactions work., and the big one, group roles. Once you understand those, the interface is fairly straightforward, and it's easy to find answers to specifics on the interface.

But the very first thing you need to know about groups is that can be used for several different purposes:

Commercial and land related:
1. To share ownership of land
2. To control access and privileges for land
3. To promote a product-oriented business
4. To promote an event-oriented business
5. To provide customer support

Non-commercial: (On the whole, these differ in policy, not configuration.)
6. To provide a mechanism for people with similar interests to meet
7. To provide a forum for social or topical interactions
8. To provide a narrowly defined forum for discussion (e.g. an OOC forum limited to policy decisions on a RP sim)

There are probably more, but the main point is that you need to understand the aspects peculiar to your purpose. If you're not using it for land ownership or control, then you don't need to waste very much time on understanding details of roles and privileges. Just don't allow people to donate tier or deed objects to the group. If you're not using it for social interactions, then you probably don't need to spend much time on policies or configuration for using group IM.

The only reason for needing to know everything is if you're planning on all of the above. So how about telling us you're goal, and perhaps we can give more detailed advice.

The technical side..and yes the group will have land deeded to it..my land ..which is why I need to know as much as possible about group formation and function before I commit.

I've been looking at those and you're right..but I'm a little concerned about missing something..see above..and below.

The basic reason for the formation of the group is to give other residents (members of the group) access and use of certain plots of land located at various points about the Continents of SL. These plots are owned by me (I pay the tier on them) and before I set up the group I want to ensure that I will retain absolute control over the group and the land it (I) own - from membership of the group to the purchase/sale/disposal of plots. We're talking about several plots in every continent here, so you can understand I'm being very cautious about doing something I might regret, hence my original question.

It does have a commercial purpose, though membership of the group will actually be free and no other member of the group will be asked to deed land (just me). With the exception of myself group members will simply be allowed free access and use of the land. The purpose of most plots is to access the various waterways and oceans around SL...in a word 'sailing'.

Got any advice..? Perre..:)
