There's a presentation (audio plus a slide show) by Babbage Linden on some technical aspects of Second Life in case anyone's interested, at

http://www.langnetsymposium.com/2009/talks/17-JimPurbrick-SecondLife.html

Note that it apparently requires Silverlight to watch it. It didn't work in Firefox even after installing Silverlight, but I used the IETab add-on to render the tab it was in with IE inside Firefox, which did work.

It's a bit technical, not a good party video.

I now seem to have discovered a use for IEtab that solves a problem that has bugged me for the longest time.

I have a number of gmail accounts, and I'd like to be able to have more than one open in separate tabs and not have them interfere with each other, but the cookies for a google account are shared by all tabs.

Set a tab to render with IE using IEtab, though, and you can open one gmail account in that tab and have another gmail account open in a different tab using the standard FF renderer and it appears to work just fine. So far, at least.

I've been using IE tab for a long time and really like it.

As for your multiple gmail accounts, I'm not sure if this would work for you but perhaps an easier way to do it is under settings>forwarding pop/imap, I have all my other accounts forwarded to my main gmail I always have open. I also enable the custom "from" address under settings>account and enter in the alt gmail accounts. This way all my mail from my alternate accounts come into my main gmail, and I can then reply back using the alternate account's "from" address or send from my main using an alternate "from" address. Saves me from having another tab open in FF. I've also seen add-ons to manage multiple gmail accounts but this method seems to work well for me.

This probably explains it much better than I just did: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-link-multiple-gmail-accounts-together-in-4-easy-steps/

Two strikes: no transcript, and it requires Silverlight. Having survived the meltdown of Microsoft's previous attempts to make ActiveX and .NET "secure", I'm not going to install Silverlight even if I get to throw a pie at Bill Gates in trade.

And I don't understand the point of IEtab. If you're running it in IE you're running it in IE, whether it's hidden inside a Firefox tab or not. That's like expecting a prayer hanky to keep you from getting AIDS.

Maybe this url will work with less trouble: http://download.microsoft.com/download/B/F/0/BF0DAE51-F096-4DB4-8707-ACBDB7680BC0/17-JimPurbrick-SecondLife.wmv

I just clicked on the big obvious link when I first saw it and didn't even see the three letter link to a wmv file next to the big one.

At one time there was a game called Tangleword that only ran properly in IE. I used to hate having to run IE to play it. It failed to work properly in any browser but IE for many years. Firefox and Opera never dealt with it. If that condition still existed, that would be a reason why I'd use IETab. At least I'd be spared having to see the IE icon down on the taskbar. Tangleword is now on the Whirled.com in modified form so it's a moot point now. I don't play the game anymore, so it's even mooter. The old version of Tangleword really rocked.

The main url for the symposium is http://www.langnetsymposium.com/overview.aspx, in case anyone want that.

Sigh, why did AOL buy NullSoft and ruin WinAmp?

Things were good back in the WinAmp days.

I'd rather have that icon down on the task bar reminding me that I'm doing the equivalent of having unprotected sex, rather than wrapping the IE window in a cheesecloth condom.
