Never mind the X2 part, even just the HD4850 seems to have unacceptable OpenGL driver problems for all known versions of Catalyst. See http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-9763. ATI has a long history of messing up OpenGL drivers for newer hardware (and for Linux, regardless of age).

Hmm that is not good. That is saying that it just won't work.

Video cards are never too new for a game. They only perform better. Or not, because SL has a major backlog on driver support.
It's waiting for a new patch from Linden Labs to cover the newer cards. _____________________

... and we had so hoped that ATI's historically poor driver performance would be fixed when AMD bought them i guess this is not the case ...yet anyways.

Well, to be fair, even nVidia has been having OpenGL problems in recent driver releases. It's weird that ATI has such problems because they have (or at least had) some world-class experts on OpenGL internals. Ever hopeful: maybe Apple hired them away--God knows they need them.

I always wondered why they don't use Direct Draw instead of the everlasting shitty OpenGL.
It's slow, it's unstable, it's befriended with Microsoft, and thus bad for you. I wish LL adds a DirectX function so I can choose my own favorite 3D rendering device. _____________________

A little too "befriended with Microsoft" for viability, I think, if one had to choose just one, and choosing both would be a pretty expensive investment in development and (especially) support. If what's in the works for Ubuntu on mobile platforms is halfway realized, OpenGL may yet prove the right choice for LL's oft-stated desire for a true "mobile SL"...
well, given a few breakthroughs in battery life._____________________

Well...I just stuck my 4850 in my PC and it just worked. Using Catalyst 10 drivers but there's an issue with those, the catalyst control panel won't load but i'm too busy larking around in SL to bother.
Do a search for 4850, there was a thread on doing stuff to make it work even though I didn't have to. |
