By the way: I wish I could remember who made that picture, it's so incredibly clear and concise I've been waiting for a chance to use it. Anybody know so I can rename it accordingly or something? I sure don't want to take credit, just use it cuz it's handy :)

:p You and every scripter in SL! That is to say: it's showing every time something forces a communication event from the sim to the viewer that "updates" the object, and we honestly don't know *why* some of those updates are triggered from the sim sometimes, and sometimes not. At a minimum, it will show when prim properties change (like anything that can be set by llSetPrimParameters(), plus persistent stuff like llSitTarget(), llParticleSystem(), llSetText(), llTargetOmega(), etc.)... and sometimes--but not always--when the values don't actually change but are just reset to their existing values by script (or something). And just to make it extra obscure, this behavior seems to change from one release of the server to the next.

That's for objects. For avatars (the blue triangles)... who knows? Presumably when they change animations or attachments or textures, or move/rotate, or ...

They removed the Show Updates keyboard shortcut from the 1.21 RC0 viewer. I assume it's not coming back, since people enabling it by mistake is such a problem FAQ..

The red vs blue shows how big of an update the sim is sending to everybody. Red is a full update where everybody gets all the details on the object; blue is a partial update where the sim is just changing the position or rotation of the object but not changing the object itself. Green is an object being deleted.

From watching this stuff over the last year or so, I suspect that changing flexi properties of an object/attachment will trigger a full object update - prim avatars with really active tails/ears are sorta notorious for this. I also suspect that an avatar changing it's current animation will trigger a partial update.

I also suspect that the sim will sometimes do a refresh on all avatars just for the hell of it.. Maybe a "here's what everybody is supposed to look like, just in case you missed something earlier" sorta deal.
